Nuvo is the right answer for Pittsburgh homeowners who want hard-water protection without hauling salt, refilling a brine tank, or adding sodium to their water. It uses a citric-based formula in a compact cartridge to keep calcium and magnesium suspended so they pass through your plumbing instead of scaling it up. Two versions: Nuvo Softener for scale only, and Nuvo Plus Taste which adds a carbon filter for chlorine and odor.
How Nuvo works
A traditional softener swaps hardness minerals out for sodium. Nuvo does not. Instead, the system uses a food-grade citric chelation agent to bind to calcium and magnesium ions and keep them in solution. The minerals are still in your water (so taste stays neutral and beneficial minerals remain), but they cannot bond to your pipes, fixtures, or appliances.
The cartridge gets replaced every six months in a typical Pittsburgh home. That is the only maintenance.
The two units
Nuvo Softener
Scale prevention only. The base model. Citric-formula cartridge inline on your main water line. Compact (mounts on a basement wall), no electricity, no drain, no salt.
Best for: homes where hard water and scale are the only complaint. Households that do not want to add sodium to their water. Septic systems where you cannot dump softener brine. Smaller utility rooms where a salt softener will not fit.
Nuvo Plus Taste
Same citric scale prevention plus a built-in carbon filter that knocks down chlorine, chloramines, and the chemicals that drive bad taste and shower smell. Two stages in one cabinet.
Best for: homes where scale and chlorine taste are both bothering you and you want one cabinet to handle both. Households where the shower smells like a swimming pool. Coffee drinkers and tea drinkers who notice city water chlorine in the cup.
Nuvo vs. the alternatives
vs. a Traditional Salt-Based Softener. A salt softener physically removes hardness minerals. Nuvo keeps them suspended. The salt unit gives you the classic “slippery soft water” shower feel and the strongest scale fix. Nuvo gives you no salt, no brine, no maintenance beyond a 6-month cartridge swap, and no sodium added to your water.
vs. Halo Ion. Halo Ion does the same scale-suspension job with magnetic fields and zero consumables (no cartridge changes ever). Pick Ion if you want true maintenance-free. Pick Nuvo if you want the citric mechanism or you need the Plus Taste carbon filter.
vs. Halo 5. The Halo 5 is a bigger five-stage system that handles scale, chlorine, sediment, and heavy metals. Nuvo Plus Taste covers scale and chlorine. If you need heavy-metal reduction or whole-home filtration breadth, step up to the Halo 5.
vs. Flow-Tech. Flow-Tech is electromagnetic and needs a power outlet. Nuvo is mechanical and needs none. Both prevent scale without removing minerals.
What Nuvo solves, by symptom
The “If this, then that” chart routes the following symptoms to Nuvo or Nuvo Plus Taste:
- Hard water and scale (Nuvo and Nuvo Plus Taste)
- Spotted dishes (both)
- Chlorine and chloramines (Nuvo Plus Taste only)
- Unpleasant smell or taste (Nuvo Plus Taste only)
- Issues with drinking water (Nuvo Plus Taste, alongside RO recommendations)
- Tankless water heater needing flushed (both)
- Regular water heater losing efficiency (both)
- Weak shower from scaled fixtures (both)
- Metallic taste (Nuvo Plus Taste, alongside other systems)

Install day
A Nuvo install takes about two hours for a Wahl plumber. We shut off the main, cut in upstream of the water heater, mount the cartridge housing, and pressure-test. The unit needs no outlet, no drain, and no floor space (it wall-mounts).
The Plus Taste model takes a bit longer because of the second-stage filter housing. Still same-day, usually before lunch.
Cartridge schedule
Nuvo and Nuvo Plus Taste use a cartridge that lasts about six months in standard Pittsburgh water conditions. We sell replacements direct and ship them on a subscription if you want it automatic. Wahl Club members get cartridge swaps scheduled with their annual maintenance visit.

Frequently asked questions
Will Nuvo make my water test “soft”?
No. The minerals stay in the water. A test strip will still show hardness. What changes is whether those minerals stick to your pipes and fixtures. They no longer do.
Is Nuvo really maintenance free?
Almost. You swap the cartridge once every six months. That is the only thing you do. No salt, no backwash, no filter changes beyond the single cartridge.
Does Nuvo work as well as a salt softener?
For scale prevention in city water, yes. For the classic “slippery shower” soft-water feel, no. Soap will still lather differently than with a salt softener. If that feel is what you want, choose a salt unit.
Is Nuvo safe for septic systems?
Yes. That is one of its best fits. Salt softeners dump brine into the wastewater stream, which is hard on septic biology. Nuvo does not.
Does the cartridge add anything to the water?
The citric chelation agent is food-grade and FDA-listed. It does not affect taste in normal use and leaves no measurable residue at the tap.
What is the difference between Nuvo Softener and Nuvo Plus Taste?
Plus Taste adds a carbon filter for chlorine, chloramines, and bad-taste compounds. Same scale protection on both, plus extra filtration on the Plus Taste.
Will it help my tankless water heater?
Yes. One of the most common reasons we install Nuvo (or Halo Ion, or Flow-Tech) is to keep a tankless from scaling up. Scaled tankless units lose efficiency and need expensive descaling flushes. Treated water dramatically reduces that.
