Pittsburgh heating is not generic. Our winters drop below zero, our older homes still run steam and cast iron, and our newer construction is asking for heat pumps that actually work in February. Wahl Family Heating, Cooling & Plumbing has installed, serviced, and replaced every kind of heating system in Allegheny County since 1980. We are the local crew that knows the difference between a Beechview row house with a 1948 cast iron boiler and a new build in Cranberry asking for a cold-climate inverter heat pump.
When your heat goes out at 11pm in January, that is not a small inconvenience. That is pipes freezing, that is a family in coats, that is a real emergency. We answer the phone 24/7 and we are a Rheem Pro Partner, which means we hold the top dealer tier with the brand most Pittsburgh homes already run. We are also the area’s exclusive Bosch dealer for cold-climate heat pumps, which matters because most heat pumps lose serious capacity below 17 degrees and the Bosch line does not.
What we install and service
We work on the full Pittsburgh heating stack. Three primary categories, sixteen distinct system types underneath.
Furnaces
Forced-air natural gas heat is still the most common system in Pittsburgh. We install Rheem 80% AFUE standard furnaces, Rheem 90%+ high-efficiency models, and Rheem variable-speed modulating furnaces. Trane and Ameristar are our secondary brand options. See the furnace hub for tier-by-tier detail.
Boilers
Older Pittsburgh runs on boilers. We are one of the few local contractors that does meaningful volume across all six boiler types: combi, standard hot water, steam, cast iron, high-efficiency condensing, and commercial. The boiler hub breaks down which one fits your home.
- Combi boilers
- Standard hot water boilers
- Steam boilers
- Cast iron boilers
- High-efficiency condensing boilers
- Commercial boilers
Heat pumps
Heat pump adoption is real and accelerating in Pittsburgh, partly because of rebates and partly because the cold-climate technology has finally caught up to Western Pennsylvania winters. We are Pittsburgh’s exclusive Bosch cold-climate dealer (the line designed for our exact climate) and a Rheem Pro Partner for standard 15 to 20 SEER inverter systems. See the heat pump hub.
How we run a heating job
The Wahl process is the same on a furnace swap as it is on a six-figure boiler retrofit.
- We come out and look at your existing system, your ductwork or piping, your fuel source, and your real-world comfort complaints. The diagnostic is not a five-minute walk-through.
- We present three or four real options, on paper, with member and standard pricing shown side by side. You see the price before any work starts.
- You pick the option that fits your home and your budget. We schedule the install around your week, not ours.
- We install with our W-2 employees, not subcontractors. Every job gets a commissioning checklist before we leave.
- We back the work with a real warranty and a Wahl Club membership so the annual tune-up is already handled.
Common Pittsburgh heating problems we fix
- Boiler runs but radiators are cold or only some get hot
- Furnace short-cycling (turns on and off every few minutes)
- Heat pump stops heating below a certain outdoor temperature
- Cold spots upstairs, hot spots downstairs
- High gas bills with no obvious cause
- Steam boiler banging or hammering at startup
- Pilot light keeps going out
- Heat exchanger cracked (carbon monoxide risk, this is an emergency)
- No heat after a power outage
- Thermostat replacement and zoning add-ons
If your system is older than 15 years, a repair conversation should also be a replacement conversation. We will quote both. You decide.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a furnace installation take in Pittsburgh?
A standard residential furnace replacement is one day, typically eight to ten hours. A full system replacement (furnace plus AC plus new line set) is one to two days. Boiler installs run longer, two to four days depending on whether we are also redoing piping. Heat pump installs are usually one to two days.
What size heating system do I need?
Bigger is not better. An oversized furnace short-cycles, wastes gas, and wears parts faster. We run a Manual J load calculation on every install based on your square footage, insulation, window count, exposure, and air infiltration. The number that comes out of that calculation is the right size, not a thumbnail estimate.
Do you service systems you did not install?
Yes. We service every major brand of furnace, boiler, and heat pump in Pittsburgh, including Carrier, Lennox, Goodman, York, Bryant, Amana, and others. Our technicians carry parts for the common Pittsburgh repairs (igniters, flame sensors, inducer motors, gas valves, control boards) on the truck.
Should I repair or replace my heating system?
The honest cutoff is roughly 50% of replacement cost. If the repair is going to run more than half of what a new system would cost, and the system is over 12 years old, replacement is almost always the better economic move. We will quote both and show you the math.
Do you handle gas line work?
Yes. We install new gas service, extend gas lines, repair leaks, and connect appliances. That matters because a lot of heating projects (new furnace, new water heater, new range hookup) also need gas work, and we do not subcontract it out.
What is the difference between a Rheem Pro Partner and a regular dealer?
Pro Partner is the top dealer tier Rheem awards. It means our technicians have the highest level of factory training, we carry the deepest parts inventory, and we offer the longest available warranties on Rheem equipment. Not many Pittsburgh contractors hold that status.
How cold does it have to get before a heat pump stops working?
A standard heat pump loses serious capacity around 20 to 25 degrees and most homeowners feel it. A cold-climate heat pump (we carry Bosch exclusively for this) holds capacity down to about 5 degrees and operates well below zero with backup heat strips. For Pittsburgh, cold-climate is the right answer if you want a heat pump as your primary heat.
