Commercial HVAC and plumbing in Pittsburgh
When a rooftop unit quits, a boiler goes down, or a drain backs up, your building is losing money by the hour. Wahl has been taking care of Western Pennsylvania since 1980, and the same crews and standards that go into homes go into offices, schools, retail, restaurants, and multi-tenant buildings. One contractor, every trade, start to finish.
One contractor for the entire building
Most mechanical contractors do one thing. If your heating and cooling company does not touch plumbing, you are managing two vendors, two schedules, and two invoices, and when something goes wrong at the seam between them, nobody owns it.
We run heating, cooling, plumbing, water treatment, sewer work, and excavation in house, with our own people and our own equipment. The rooftop unit, the restrooms, the water line under the parking lot, the drain that keeps backing up, it is one call and one company standing behind the work.
- Commercial heating and cooling, from rooftop units to high-efficiency systems
- Commercial boilers, hydronic heat, and steam
- Mitsubishi City Multi VRF for offices, schools, and multi-tenant buildings
- Commercial plumbing service, repair, and repiping
- Sewer, drain, water service, and gas line work, including the excavation
- Water treatment and indoor air quality

Commercial HVAC, including VRF
We are a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite contractor, and that includes City Multi VRF, or variable refrigerant flow. VRF can heat some zones while it cools others at the same time, which is exactly what a building with a sunny south side, an interior conference room, and a warm server closet actually needs. It is also one of the few ways to modernize an older building without tearing it open for new ductwork.
Designing and commissioning it takes specific training and certification. We have it, and we have put more than thirty indoor heads on a single school project. If you have been told VRF is not possible in your building, it is worth a second look.
We also install and service rooftop units, packaged equipment, and conventional split systems. As a Rheem Pro Partner and a Bosch dealer we can specify the right equipment for the building instead of the only equipment we can get.
- Rooftop units and packaged systems, installation and service
- Mitsubishi City Multi VRF design, installation, and commissioning
- High-efficiency heat pumps and cold-climate systems
- Controls, thermostats, and zoning
- Ductwork design, repair, and replacement
- Planned maintenance agreements built around your equipment
Boilers, hydronic heat, and steam
Pittsburgh is a boiler town. A lot of the buildings here were heated with steam or hot water long before anyone thought about ductwork, and for plenty of them that is still the right answer. We work on all of it: cast iron and high-efficiency condensing boilers, hot water and steam, radiant and hydronic loops, circulators, zone valves, controls, and the near-boiler piping that most of the trouble actually hides in.
This is where the wrong contractor costs you twice. A boiler gets swapped, the rest of the system is left exactly as broken as it was, and the building still has cold rooms. We look at the whole loop before we quote the box.
Commercial plumbing, sewer, and excavation, all ours
Our excavation crews and equipment are ours, not a subcontractor's. That is unusual for a mechanical contractor, and on a commercial site it is the difference between one company scheduling the work and three companies pointing at each other.
Water service lines, gas service lines, sewer laterals, and building drains, plus the concrete and site restoration when the work is done. We camera the line and find the real problem before anybody digs. When a restroom, a kitchen, or a whole riser needs repiped, that is our own plumbing department, not a referral.
- Water and gas service line installation and replacement
- Sewer lateral and building drain repair and replacement
- Camera inspection and line locating before excavation
- Repiping, fixtures, and commercial water heating
- Drain cleaning, jetting, and recurring backup diagnosis
- Concrete and site restoration when the work is finished
The buildings we work in
Our commercial work is light commercial and institutional. If you manage property, you get one number for every trade, technicians who look and act the part in front of your tenants, and a company that tells you the truth about what your building needs and what it does not.
- Office and professional buildings
- Retail and restaurants
- Schools, churches, and community buildings
- Apartment and multi-tenant residential
- Medical and dental offices
- Light industrial and warehouse space
- Owners and managers running several locations at once

What you get with Wahl behind you
John Wahl started this company in 1980. His kids bought it and run it today, so the name on the truck is the name of the family that answers for the work. That is the whole reason we are careful about who we send into your building.
Everyone here is held to the Wahl of Excellence, the standard painted across our warehouse wall: professional excellence, empathy first, rapid responsiveness, a done today mentality, and awareness of the entire job rather than just the piece in front of us. It is not a poster. It is what we hire, train, and measure to.

Questions, answered
Do you handle commercial work, or only homes?
Both. Most people know us as a residential company because that is where most of our volume is, but we have run commercial and institutional work for decades, from rooftop units and commercial boilers to a VRF system with more than thirty heads in a school. Same crews, same standards.
Do you sub out any of the trades?
Heating, cooling, plumbing, water treatment, sewer work, and excavation are all in house with our own people and equipment. If a job needs a trade outside our licenses, we tell you plainly who is doing what before the work starts rather than letting you find out on site.
What is VRF, and would my building benefit from it?
VRF stands for variable refrigerant flow. One outdoor system feeds many indoor units, and it can heat and cool different zones at the same time, so the sunny side of the building and the interior offices stop fighting each other. It fits older buildings well because it needs far less space than ductwork. Whether it is right for you depends on the building, and we will tell you if it is not.
Do you offer commercial maintenance agreements?
Yes. We can put your equipment on a planned maintenance schedule so filters, belts, coils, drains, and controls get looked at before a hot Friday in July turns into a shutdown. Call us and we will build it around your building rather than selling you a package that does not fit.
How quickly can you get here when something goes down?
We run emergency service around the clock and commercial downtime gets priority. Rather than promise you a number to win the call, we will look at the board and tell you honestly when we can be there.
How do we get started?
Call us and tell us what building you are calling about and what it is doing, or fill out the form on this page and we will call you back. If it is a project rather than a repair, we will come out, look at the whole system, and put options in front of you in writing.
