Most home services websites are sales brochures. The Wahl Library is something different. It is a homeowner’s reference for HVAC, plumbing, and water systems, written by the people who actually install and service these systems in Pittsburgh every day. No fluff, no SEO filler, no AI-written generalizations. Real guidance on real decisions, the same way we would explain it across the kitchen table.
If you are a Pittsburgh homeowner trying to figure out which furnace, AC, heat pump, boiler, water heater, or plumbing upgrade is right for your home, start here. If you are not ready to buy yet, that is fine. We would rather you do your homework and call us when you are ready than feel pressured into a decision today.
What is in the Library
Buying guides
The big questions, walked through with the same logic our techs use during in-home consultations. Pittsburgh-grounded throughout. Two to three thousand words each because the decisions deserve real depth.
- How to pick a furnace (gas, efficiency tiers, sizing, brand, what really matters)
- How to pick an AC (SEER, sizing, inverter vs single-stage, what runs in Pittsburgh)
- How to pick a heat pump (cold-climate vs standard, rebates, when heat pumps work and when they do not)
- How to pick a boiler (the six types, walked through the way Pittsburgh’s older housing stock actually uses them)
- How to pick a mini-split (single zone, multi-zone, when ductless is the right answer)
Comparisons
Side-by-side decision tools when you are torn between two technologies.
Pittsburgh guides
Local context for systems that behave differently in Western Pennsylvania than they do in marketing materials written for the national market.
- Cold weather HVAC in Pittsburgh (what works, what does not, what older heat pumps still cannot do)
- Older home plumbing in Pittsburgh (galvanized, cast iron, lead service lines, steam systems, what to expect)
Glossary
- Glossary of HVAC and plumbing terms (SEER, AFUE, HSPF, BTU, CFM, COP, GPM, MERV, VRF, CIPP, PRV, ERV, HRV explained plainly)
Why we built the Library
Three reasons.
Pittsburgh homeowners deserve better information. Most online HVAC content is written by content mills, optimized for search engines, and not particularly accurate. We are not going to be perfect, but everything in the Library has been read by the people who actually install and service the equipment. When we are wrong, we will fix it. When something is debatable, we will say so.
Decisions get made better with good information. If you understand what a balance point is, you can have a real conversation with us about whether dual-fuel or all-electric heat pump makes sense for your house. If you understand the difference between SEER and HSPF, you can read a product spec sheet and know what matters. The Library is meant to level you up before any sales conversation.
Trust is earned over time. Wahl has been in Pittsburgh since 1980. 1,500+ Google reviews at 4.8 stars. BBB A+ accredited. We are not going anywhere. The Library is part of how we earn ongoing trust with this community.
How to use the Library
Three pathways for three kinds of questions.
If you have a specific equipment decision to make, go to the buying guide for that equipment. Each guide walks through sizing, efficiency, brand, when each tier is right, and what to ask any contractor (including us) before you buy.
If you are torn between two technologies (heat pump or furnace, tank or tankless, ductless or central AC), go to the comparison page for that pair. We lay out the real tradeoffs.
If your question is Pittsburgh-specific (does this work in our winters, what do I do with my old steam boiler, why is my water hard, what about my cast iron stack), go to the Pittsburgh guides.
If you do not know which pathway fits, call us. We will help you figure out the right question to ask.
What we sell, what we install
The Library is not a sales pitch but we will be honest about what we install. Wahl is a Rheem Pro Partner, a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite dealer (including the City Multi commercial line), and Pittsburgh’s exclusive Bosch dealer for cold-climate heat pumps. We install Trane and Ameristar as secondary HVAC brands. On the plumbing and water side, we install Rheem and Bradford White water heaters, Nuvo and Halo and Flow-Tech water treatment, and we are a Pro Press, PEX, and copper repipe contractor with a master plumber on staff.
When a buying guide mentions a specific brand, that is because we install it, we know its strengths, and we have direct experience. We will also tell you when a different brand might fit your house better.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Library independent?
We wrote it, so it is not independent in the journalism sense. It is more like a reference book your contractor would give you. The advice is honest, the comparisons are real, and when we recommend our own equipment we will tell you why. When a different brand or technology would fit your home better, we say so.
How often do you update the Library?
At least annually, more often when something material changes in equipment, rebates, or codes. Each page shows a “last updated” date at the top. If you are reading and something looks out of date, call us and tell us.
Will the Library answer my specific question?
Probably most of it. For the rest, call us. Phone consultations are free.
Can I share Library pages?
Yes, freely. Email them to your spouse, your contractor friend, your father-in-law. The Library is a public resource for Pittsburgh homeowners.
Is the Library a substitute for an in-home consultation?
No. The Library helps you make better decisions, but every house is different. Square footage, insulation, ductwork, windows, exposure, gas service, electrical service, water hardness, and a dozen other factors all matter to a real recommendation. An in-home consultation is free and the Library helps you arrive at it with better questions.
