Flow-Tech is the answer for Pittsburgh homeowners who want salt-free scale and corrosion protection with absolutely no consumables. No salt to lift. No cartridge to swap. No filter to change. The unit wraps around your incoming water line, pulses an electromagnetic signal through the pipe, and keeps hardness minerals suspended so they cannot bond to your plumbing, fixtures, or water heater.

How Flow-Tech works

The Flow-Tech unit consists of a small electronic control box and a coil that wraps around the outside of your incoming copper or PEX line. It uses a low-power electromagnetic field to alter the way calcium and magnesium ions behave in solution. Instead of clumping together and sticking to the inside of your pipes, they stay suspended and pass through your home and back out the drain.

Side benefits: the same electromagnetic effect helps existing scale deposits release over time, so you can actually see scale start to disappear from fixtures in the first few months. It also reduces corrosion in copper and steel lines.

What you get

  • Salt-free scale prevention across your whole home
  • Reduction of existing scale buildup in pipes, water heaters, and fixtures
  • Corrosion protection for older copper and galvanized lines
  • No salt, no brine, no cartridge, no filter
  • No drain line required
  • Very small footprint (the coil wraps the existing pipe, the control box is the size of a router)

What it does NOT do

Flow-Tech is scale and corrosion only. It does not:

Pair Flow-Tech with one of those if your problem list is broader than scale.

When Flow-Tech is the right call

  • You have hard water and scale, and that is your main complaint.
  • You want a true zero-maintenance solution. No salt bags. No filter swaps.
  • You like the idea of softening without removing minerals from your drinking water.
  • You have a tankless water heater you do not want to descale every year.
  • Your basement is tight and you do not have room for a salt softener cabinet.

Flow-Tech vs. the alternatives

vs. Halo Ion. Both are salt-free, both keep minerals suspended, both protect against scale. Flow-Tech uses an electromagnetic signal (needs a power outlet). Halo Ion uses permanent magnetic fields (needs no power). Performance is comparable on most Pittsburgh water. Flow-Tech has the slight edge on dissolving existing scale; Halo Ion has the edge on simplicity.

vs. Nuvo. Nuvo uses a citric formula in a cartridge. Cartridge swap every six months. Flow-Tech has zero consumables ever. Pick Nuvo if you want the Plus Taste version with carbon filtration. Pick Flow-Tech if you want pure salt-free scale protection with zero ongoing cost.

vs. Traditional Salt Softener. Salt softeners physically remove hardness minerals and give you that classic soft-water feel. Flow-Tech keeps the minerals in your water. Trade-off: zero salt, zero brine, zero sodium added, but no “slippery” shower experience.

vs. Halo 5. The Halo 5 is a five-stage cabinet (scale, chlorine, sediment, heavy metals, self-cleaning). Flow-Tech is scale only. Pick the 5 if you have multiple problems. Pick Flow-Tech if scale is the entire list.

Install day

A Flow-Tech install takes about two hours for a Wahl plumber. We mount the coil around your incoming water line just upstream of the water heater, run the signal cable to the control box, and plug it into a nearby 110V outlet. No cutting into the pipe is required; the coil is non-invasive.

Because it is non-invasive, Flow-Tech is one of the only scale solutions we can install on homes where cutting the main is impractical (some condos, some commercial spaces).

Frequently asked questions

Does Flow-Tech really work without cutting my pipes?

Yes. The coil wraps around the outside of your existing pipe. The electromagnetic signal passes through the pipe wall to influence the water inside. We do mount it permanently and secure it, but we do not have to break into your plumbing.

Will my water test “soft” after Flow-Tech?

No. The minerals are still in the water. The test strip will still read hard. What changes is whether they stick. They no longer do.

Does it need power?

Yes. The control box plugs into a standard 110V outlet. Power draw is similar to a small router (a few watts). It is not metered noticeably.

What happens if the power goes out?

The unit stops conditioning while it is off. When power returns, it resumes. Brief outages have no meaningful effect on scale protection.

Will it work on a tankless water heater?

Yes. Flow-Tech is one of the best fits for tankless installations because it keeps the heat exchanger free of scale without adding salt or maintenance.

Does it remove chlorine smell?

No. Flow-Tech is scale and corrosion only. For chlorine, add a carbon filter or step up to a Halo 5 or Nuvo Plus Taste.

How long does the unit last?

The coil is essentially permanent. The control box typically runs 10 to 15 years before electronics wear out.
