The Halo 5 is the system we install most often in Pittsburgh homes where the owner wants one cabinet to handle everything. Filter the chlorine, drop out the sediment, knock down the heavy metals, prevent scale, and never touch it again. It does all of that in one unit, with a lifetime warranty on the housing and a self-cleaning cycle that means no salt to haul and no media to swap.

What the Halo 5 actually does

Most “whole-home” systems do one job. A softener removes hardness. A carbon filter removes chlorine. A scale inhibitor protects pipes. The Halo 5 stacks five stages into a single cabinet so you get the result of all three.

  1. Sediment stage. Catches the rust flakes and grit that come off Pittsburgh’s older main lines.
  2. Catalytic carbon stage. Knocks out chlorine, chloramines, and the chemicals that drive bad taste and chlorine smell in the shower.
  3. Heavy-metal reduction. Targets lead, mercury, and other dissolved metals that can pick up from aging service lines.
  4. Scale prevention. Keeps calcium and magnesium suspended so they pass through your plumbing instead of building up inside your water heater and tankless coil.
  5. Self-cleaning backwash. The unit rinses itself on a schedule. You do not change a filter. You do not pour anything in.

Why Pittsburgh homeowners pick the Halo 5

  • One cabinet, one decision. No separate softener and filter to install, plumb, and service.
  • No salt. Nothing to lift, no brine, no salt bridges. Better fit for low-sodium households and septic systems.
  • Lifetime warranty on the cabinet. The structural part of the system is covered for as long as you own the home.
  • Self-cleaning. No filter cartridges to swap on a schedule. The unit handles its own backwash.
  • Pairs with the Halo RO Plus at the kitchen sink if you want drinking-water alkalinity on top of whole-home filtration.

What it handles, by symptom

If you are dealing with any of these, the Halo 5 is on the short list:

  • Hard water and scale on faucets, shower doors, glass
  • Spotted dishes coming out of the dishwasher
  • Chlorine smell in the shower
  • Metallic or chemical taste at the tap
  • Tankless water heater that needs flushed often
  • Weak shower pressure from scaled-up fixtures

How install day works

A standard Halo 5 install in a Pittsburgh home takes about four hours. We shut off the main, cut in upstream of the water heater, plumb the bypass loop, set the drain line, and run the unit through its first regeneration cycle before we leave. You get a free water retest two weeks after install so we can confirm the system is dialed in.

The cabinet wants a 110V outlet within 6 feet and a drain within 10 feet. Most basements in the South Hills and North Hills have that already. If yours does not, our techs handle the small electrical and drain work the same day.

Halo 5 vs. the alternatives

vs. a traditional salt softener. A softener will give you the slipperiest “soft water” feel. The Halo 5 prevents scale without removing the minerals, which keeps your water tasting like water and avoids adding sodium. If you do not care about the soft-water shower feel and you want one unit, choose Halo 5. If you want that classic softener feel, look at our Traditional Salt-Based Softener page.

vs. the Halo Ion. The Halo Ion is a smaller, simpler, magnetic-only unit. It handles scale prevention but does not filter chlorine, sediment, or heavy metals. Pick Ion if scale is the only problem. Pick the 5 if there is more than one thing going on.

vs. Flow-Tech. Flow-Tech is also scale-only, electromagnetic, no filter. Same trade-off as the Ion.

vs. Nuvo Plus Taste. The Nuvo Plus Taste is a smaller-footprint salt-free unit with a carbon filter. Less aggressive on heavy metals than the Halo 5, but it costs less and fits where the Halo 5 will not.

Pittsburgh Homeowners Ask

Frequently asked questions

Does the Halo 5 soften water?

It conditions water by suspending hardness minerals rather than removing them. You will still see hardness on a test strip. You will not see scale on your fixtures or in your water heater. If you want a true ion-exchange softener feel (slippery shower, lather lift), pair it with a salt softener or choose a Traditional Salt-Based Softener instead.

How long do the filters last?

The Halo 5 is self-cleaning, so there are no consumable filters to swap on a regular schedule. The internal media is rated for the life of the cabinet under normal Pittsburgh water conditions.

Will it remove lead?

The Halo 5 reduces dissolved lead through its heavy-metal stage. If your home has a known lead service line, we typically recommend pairing it with a Halo RO Plus or standard Reverse Osmosis at the kitchen sink for drinking water, and we will quote a Whole Home Repipe as the permanent solution.

How much space does it need?

About 12 inches by 12 inches of floor space, with 4 feet of vertical clearance and access to your incoming main, a drain, and a 110V outlet.

What is the warranty?

Lifetime on the cabinet for the original owner. We back the install with our Worry-Free Guarantee.

Does it work on well water?

Yes, but we test first. Wells with high iron or sulfur sometimes need a pre-treatment stage. We do that work too.
