If scale is the only problem you are trying to solve, the Halo Ion is the simplest, cleanest answer we install. It is a maintenance-free magnetic conditioner that bolts inline on your main water line, suspends hardness minerals so they stop sticking to your pipes and water heater, and never needs salt, filters, or attention. We size it by the bathroom count in your home.

How it works

The Halo Ion uses powerful magnetic fields wrapped around the incoming water pipe. As Pittsburgh’s hard water passes through, calcium and magnesium ions get re-oriented and stay suspended in the water column instead of binding to the inside of your plumbing. The minerals are still in your water (good for taste, neutral on a softness test strip), but they no longer stick to fixtures, glass, or the heat exchanger in your tankless water heater.

No salt. No filter. No drain line. No power. No maintenance. The unit installs in about 90 minutes and then it is invisible for the life of the home.

Which size fits your home

We size the Halo Ion by peak gallons per minute, which tracks closely to bathroom count.

If you are not sure, our tech sizes on-site. Oversizing is fine. Undersizing means the unit cannot keep up at peak flow (multiple showers running at once) and you start to see scale return.

What problems the Halo Ion solves

What it does NOT do: it does not filter chlorine, sediment, or heavy metals. It does not soften water in the salt-softener sense (no slippery shower feel, no lather lift). Halo Ion vs. the alternatives

vs. Flow-Tech. Both are salt-free electromagnetic conditioners. Flow-Tech wraps a coil around the pipe and pulses an electromagnetic signal. The Halo Ion uses permanent magnetic fields. Performance is similar in most Pittsburgh homes. Flow-Tech needs a power outlet. Halo Ion does not.

vs. Halo 5. The Halo 5 is a five-stage cabinet that filters chlorine, sediment, and heavy metals on top of scale prevention. Pick the 5 if you have more than one problem. Pick the Ion if scale is the only thing bothering you.

vs. Nuvo. Nuvo uses a citric formula in a cartridge to keep minerals suspended. Different mechanism, similar result for scale. Nuvo cartridges get swapped every 6 months. Halo Ion has nothing to swap.

vs. Traditional Salt Softener. Salt softeners physically remove the hardness minerals and replace them with sodium. That is the most aggressive scale fix and the only way to get true “soft water” shower feel. Trade-off: salt bags, brine tank, sodium in the water.

Install day

A Halo Ion install takes about 90 minutes for a Wahl plumber. We shut off the main, cut in two short sections of pipe, secure the unit, and pressure-test the joints. The unit is permanently mounted but compact (smaller than a shoebox), and it does not need an outlet, a drain, or any service access. Most basements in Allegheny County have plenty of room.
