Always Fresh is the budget-friendly under-sink drinking water filter we install when you want better-tasting water at the kitchen tap without the cost or footprint of a full reverse osmosis system. It is compact, reduces chlorine and lead and a useful list of common contaminants, and fits in cabinets where there is no room for the tank and manifold of an RO unit.
What Always Fresh does
The Always Fresh is a multi-stage activated carbon and contaminant-reduction cartridge that sits under your kitchen sink. Tap water passes through the cartridge on its way to a dedicated faucet (or, on simpler installs, on its way to your existing cold tap).
It reduces:
- Chlorine and chloramines
- Lead (per cartridge spec, depending on contact time)
- Sediment
- Many bad-taste and bad-odor compounds
- Some heavy metals
- Common pesticide and herbicide residues
It does not match reverse osmosis on dissolved solids, total contaminant removal, or membrane-grade pathogen reduction. For the gold-standard solution, see Reverse Osmosis or Halo RO Plus.
When Always Fresh is the right call
- You want better-tasting water and basic contaminant reduction at the kitchen tap.
- You do not want to invest in a full RO system right now.
- Your under-sink cabinet is too tight for an RO tank and manifold.
- You are renting and want a clean drinking-water solution that is easier to remove or take with you.
- You want a starter filter and you may upgrade to RO later.
- You are pairing it with a Halo Ion or Flow-Tech upstream and you just need a kitchen-tap polish.
When to step up to RO instead
- Your home has a confirmed lead service line (we recommend RO or Halo RO Plus for lead).
- You want alkaline drinking water (Halo RO Plus).
- You want a smart faucet with filter alerts (Halo RO Plus).
- You want a leak detector under the sink (Halo RO Plus).
- You want the most thorough contaminant removal money can buy at the kitchen sink (standard RO or Halo RO Plus).
What the “If this, then that” chart says
The Always Fresh shows up in the chart for these symptoms:
- Chlorine and chloramines
- Unpleasant smell or taste
- Issues with drinking water
- Metallic taste

Install day
A standard Always Fresh install takes about an hour. The Wahl plumber:
- Mounts the filter housing under your sink (small footprint, fits next to most disposals)
- Taps the cold water line for feed
- Routes filtered water either to a dedicated faucet on the deck or, on simpler installs, integrates with the existing cold tap
- Runs the initial flush
No drain connection required. No electricity. The cartridge is rated for a specific volume of water and a typical Pittsburgh family changes it once a year.
Maintenance
One cartridge change per year for most households. Wahl Club members get it scheduled with their annual maintenance visit. Cartridges twist on and off.
Always Fresh vs. the alternatives
vs. Reverse Osmosis (standard). Standard RO is more thorough, removes dissolved solids and a longer contaminant list, and has a small storage tank for instant cold water. It costs more, takes more cabinet space, and has more service points (membrane, multiple filters). Always Fresh is simpler and cheaper. For drinking water you actually worry about (lead service line, well water with concerns), step up to RO.
vs. Halo RO Plus. Halo RO Plus is the premium tier with alkalinity boost, smart faucet, and leak detector. Always Fresh is a fraction of the cost without those features.
vs. Whole Home Carbon Filter. A whole-home carbon filter treats every tap in the house at a lower per-tap removal grade. Always Fresh treats just the kitchen tap at a higher grade. Some Pittsburgh homes install both.
vs. a pitcher filter. Always Fresh is more thorough, faster (instant filtered water at the tap rather than waiting for the pitcher to drip through), and more convenient (no refilling, no pitcher in the fridge). About the same per-gallon cost.

Frequently asked questions
Will it remove lead?
It reduces lead per the cartridge specification, but for confirmed lead service lines we recommend reverse osmosis as the drinking water solution. RO is more thorough and more consistent at lead removal.
How often do I change the cartridge?
Once a year for a typical Pittsburgh family of four. Heavy use or harder water may shorten that. We will leave a sticker on the housing with the install date.
Can I install one myself?
We do not recommend it. The cold-water tap requires a code-compliant connection and the filter housing needs to be mounted securely. A Wahl plumber takes about an hour and the install is warranted.
Does it need electricity or a drain line?
No to both. Always Fresh runs on your home’s water pressure and discharges nothing to drain.
Will the water be cold?
Yes. The filter is on the cold-water line. There is no holding tank, so water comes out at the same temperature as the incoming cold supply.
Can it connect to my fridge?
On most installs, yes. We can tee the filtered output to your fridge water line.
