The Aprilaire media air cleaner is the upgrade that solves the most common Pittsburgh air complaint: dust on every surface no matter how often you clean. The standard 1-inch fiberglass filter at your furnace was designed to protect the equipment from large debris, not to clean the air you breathe. It catches lint and pet hair, and that is about it. Everything smaller, the dust, pollen, dander, and particulate that actually triggers allergies and settles on your shelves, sails right through.
An Aprilaire 4-inch or 5-inch media air cleaner is a whole-home upgrade. It replaces that little 1-inch slot with a deep-pleated, high-surface-area filter rated for MERV 13 to MERV 16. The difference in air quality is something most customers notice within two weeks of install.
What MERV means
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is the industry-standard rating for how well a filter catches small particles. Higher MERV means more particles caught.
| MERV | What it catches | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | Large dust, lint, pet hair | The cheap 1-inch filter at your furnace |
| 8 | Dust mites, pollen, mold spores | Better grocery store filters |
| 11 to 13 | Pet dander, fine dust, some bacteria | Aprilaire residential media |
| 13 to 16 | Smoke, bacteria, fine particulate, most viruses | Aprilaire premium media, hospital-grade |
The trick with MERV is that higher numbers mean more resistance to airflow. If you put a MERV 16 filter in a slot designed for a MERV 4 filter, you choke your furnace and air handler. That is why the Aprilaire system works the way it does. A 4-inch or 5-inch deep pleated filter has so much surface area that even at MERV 13 or 16, your blower does not see much extra resistance.
What Aprilaire models we install
Aprilaire 213, 413, 213FFU: 4-inch deep pleated, MERV 13. The most popular residential install. Excellent balance of filtration and airflow. Replaces once a year for most homes.
Aprilaire 216, 416, 1610: 4-inch or 5-inch deep pleated, MERV 16. Maximum residential filtration. Recommended for homes with severe allergies, immune-compromised occupants, or anyone with respiratory disease.
Aprilaire Allergy and Asthma: Specific allergen-targeted media. Particle-specific certification through the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.
We size and choose during the in-home consult. For most Pittsburgh homes, the 213 or 413 (MERV 13) is the right balance. We bump up to MERV 16 only when there is a specific health reason.
Why media air cleaners matter in Pittsburgh
Old houses have a lot of dust. Pittsburgh houses built before 1970 often have plaster walls, original ductwork, and decades of accumulated dust in places nobody can reach. A high-MERV filter pulls more of that out of circulation.
Allergy season is long. Tree pollen in April and May, grass in June, ragweed in August and September. A 1-inch filter does almost nothing for pollen. A MERV 13 or higher media filter catches it.
Pet households are everywhere. Pittsburgh is a dog city. If you have one or more pets in the house, you have dander circulating. The Aprilaire media filter is the single biggest jump in air quality for pet households.
The basement contributes dust. Older Pittsburgh basements feed dust into the air handler return. A better filter catches it before it goes back into your bedrooms.
How an Aprilaire media cabinet installs
Half day for most installs. We replace the cheap 1-inch filter rack with an Aprilaire cabinet that holds the 4-inch or 5-inch filter.
- Remove the existing filter rack. Usually a single-piece sheet metal rack at the return inlet of the furnace.
- Cut and seal. We open up the return ducting to fit the new Aprilaire cabinet. All cuts are sealed against air leaks.
- Install the cabinet. Aprilaire cabinets are sized to your specific furnace or air handler. We mount with screws and seal the perimeter.
- Load the filter. Slide the deep-pleated filter into the cabinet. Orient correctly (airflow arrow toward the equipment).
- Verify airflow. Run the blower and confirm we have not created a restriction. Take a static pressure reading if needed.
- Show you the cabinet door, replacement filter sizing, and when to change.
When to change the filter
For most Pittsburgh homes, a 4-inch Aprilaire media filter lasts 9 to 12 months. Homes with heavy pets, indoor renovation, or year-round blower operation are closer to 6 months. The 5-inch filters can stretch to 12 to 18 months.
You can buy replacement filters from us directly, from Aprilaire, or from any major retailer that carries Aprilaire. Wahl Club members get a reminder when it is time, and we can deliver and install if you prefer.

Frequently asked questions
Will a higher-MERV filter hurt my furnace?
Not with an Aprilaire deep-pleated cabinet, no. The 4-inch and 5-inch designs have enough surface area to handle MERV 13 to MERV 16 without restricting airflow. The issue arises when people put a MERV 13 1-inch filter in a slot designed for MERV 4, which does restrict flow and can damage the equipment over time.
Can I just buy a thicker filter at the home center?
You can buy a 4-inch or 5-inch filter, but you need a cabinet that fits the filter. The Aprilaire cabinet is sized and sealed to mount in your return duct properly. Cramming a 4-inch filter into a 1-inch slot does not work. We install the cabinet first; replacement filters are available anywhere after that.
How often do I change a media filter?
For a MERV 13 4-inch Aprilaire filter in a typical Pittsburgh home, every 9 to 12 months. Pets, heavy run time, recent renovation, or smokers will shorten that to 6 months. The filter is clearly dirty when it is time, you can see it.
Does a media filter replace REME HALO or iWave?
No. A media filter catches particulates. REME HALO and iWave kill biological contaminants and neutralize gases and odors. They work together. The best IAQ packages have both.
Will an Aprilaire media filter help with COVID and flu?
A MERV 13 or higher filter does capture some viral-sized particles, especially those riding on droplets and aerosols. Hospitals use MERV 14 to MERV 17 for this reason. For maximum airborne pathogen reduction at home, we recommend MERV 13 or 16 media plus REME HALO or iWave.
Does the filter need any electrical hookup?
No. Aprilaire media filters are passive. They do not need power. The deep pleated filter sits in the cabinet and the blower pulls air through it.
Can I install an Aprilaire cabinet myself?
We do not recommend it. The cabinet has to be cut into your return ductwork, sealed properly against air bypass, and sized to your specific equipment. A bad install lets unfiltered air sneak around the filter, which defeats the purpose.
