The RGF REME HALO is the indoor air quality product we install more than any other at Wahl. It sits inside your supply ductwork, just downstream of your furnace or air handler, and uses ultraviolet light and PHI (photohydroionization) cell technology to actively clean the air everywhere your duct system reaches. Not a filter sitting still hoping particles drift into it. An active purifier sending out cleansing ions and hydroperoxides every minute your blower runs.
For a Pittsburgh home with allergies, pets, kids, anyone immune-compromised, or just a stale, closed-up winter feel, REME HALO is usually the first product we recommend.
What REME HALO actually does
The REME HALO cell creates a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide molecules (the same compound in a brown bottle in your medicine cabinet, just airborne and in much smaller quantities). These molecules ride your duct system into every room and reduce:
- Mold and mildew. Important in Pittsburgh homes with basements that have any moisture history.
- Bacteria. Including the ones responsible for the smells your dishwasher and disposal cannot fix.
- Viruses. RGF has third-party testing on common airborne viruses. We are happy to share the documentation.
- VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The off-gassing from new furniture, paint, cleaning products, candles, and air fresheners.
- Odors. Pet odors, cooking odors, smoke, basement musty smells.
- Surface contamination. Because the active molecules ride into rooms, they also reduce contamination on counters, doorknobs, and other surfaces.
Why we recommend REME HALO for Pittsburgh homes
A few things about REME HALO line up specifically with the way Pittsburgh houses are built and lived in.
It works on whole-home, not point-of-use. A standalone air purifier in the bedroom does the bedroom. REME HALO does every room your duct system reaches, the basement playroom, the upstairs bedrooms, the kitchen and living room. That matters in older two-story and three-story Pittsburgh homes where the air does not move freely between floors.
It addresses mold and basement smells. Pittsburgh basements run damp from May to September. REME HALO knocks down the airborne mold and bacteria that cause the musty smell.
It works while you sleep. As long as your furnace or air handler blower is running, REME HALO is working. With most modern thermostats set to keep the fan running or cycling, you get continuous purification.
It plays well with our other IAQ products. REME HALO is not a filter, so it does not replace your Aprilaire media air cleaner. They work together. REME HALO kills biological contaminants. The media cleaner catches dust, dander, and particulate. We often install both at the same time.
How REME HALO installs
This is typically a half-day install for an experienced Wahl technician.
- Locate the supply plenum. The REME HALO cell mounts in the supply ductwork, downstream of the furnace or air handler, where treated air leaves the equipment.
- Cut and mount. We cut a clean rectangular opening, mount the unit with self-tapping screws, and seal the perimeter.
- Electrical. REME HALO needs 24V power from your furnace transformer. We wire it through a small junction so it powers on when your blower runs.
- Verify. We make sure the cell is illuminated, the airflow is moving over it correctly, and the seal around the cell is airtight.
- Walk you through it. We show you the indicator light, where the replacement cell goes, and what to listen for.
If your duct system is unusual (older homes sometimes have round trunk lines or limited access), we work around it. We have not yet found a Pittsburgh duct system we could not fit a REME HALO into.
Maintenance
REME HALO is a low-maintenance product. The PHI cell has a service life of about 2 to 3 years (closer to 2 in homes with heavy cooking, pets, or higher run time). When it is time, you replace just the cell, not the whole unit. We can put you on a reminder schedule, or your Wahl Club membership includes a check during your annual HVAC maintenance.
The unit has an indicator light that tells you when the cell is at end of life. You will know.

Frequently asked questions
Is REME HALO safe for kids and pets?
Yes. The hydroperoxides REME HALO generates exist naturally in outdoor air and are well below any threshold that causes irritation. We have installed it in homes with newborns, asthmatics, and pets without issue. RGF publishes third-party safety testing.
Will I smell ozone?
A small amount of ozone is generated, but at a fraction of the EPA outdoor air standard. Most customers do not notice anything. A few report a faint outdoor-air smell on day one, which fades. If you are particularly sensitive, mention it during the consult and we can talk about iWave as an alternative.
Does REME HALO replace my furnace filter?
No. You still need a filter to catch dust and particulate, and we recommend an Aprilaire 4-inch or 5-inch media cleaner. REME HALO and a media filter work together, not against each other.
How long does a REME HALO cell last?
About 2 to 3 years. Heavy use (year-round blower operation, pets, heavy cooking) is closer to 2. Light use can stretch to 3. Replacement cell only, not the whole unit.
Will REME HALO help with COVID, flu, and other viruses?
RGF has tested REME HALO against multiple airborne viruses including coronaviruses and influenza, with significant reduction rates. We share the manufacturer’s third-party test data on request. Nothing eliminates 100% of any pathogen, but REME HALO meaningfully reduces airborne and surface load.
Will it work with my heat pump or mini split?
REME HALO installs in ducted forced-air systems, including ducted heat pumps. For ductless mini splits with no central air handler, REME HALO is not the right product. iWave has options that mount inside some mini split units. Ask us.
Can I install REME HALO myself?
We do not recommend it. REME HALO needs to be located in the right spot in your ductwork, sealed properly, and wired to your blower circuit so it operates correctly. The unit is sensitive to airflow direction and proper mounting. A bad install will not perform.
