Not every sewer line needs to be fully replaced or lined. When the camera shows a single failure point (a crushed section, a broken fitting, a collapse at one joint, a localized root intrusion) and the rest of the line is structurally sound, a spot repair is often the right answer. We dig at one location, replace the failed section, backfill, and restore the surface. The rest of the line stays in place.

Wahl runs sewer spot repairs across Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. The right call when the diagnosis is targeted and the rest of the pipe has years of useful life left.

When spot repair is the right answer

The camera tells us. We do not do spot repairs on a hunch.

Good candidates:

  • One bad joint with root intrusion in an otherwise intact clay or cast iron line.
  • A single collapsed section (a few feet of pipe damaged, often where a tree root or a contractor’s backhoe did the damage).
  • A broken fitting at a clean-out, branch tie-in, or transition.
  • A crushed section under a driveway or sidewalk where ground movement or vehicle weight failed one length of pipe.
  • A localized belly that can be regraded by replacing a short section.

Not candidates:

  • Multiple failure points along the run.
  • Generalized pipe degradation (Orangeburg, badly rusted cast iron throughout).
  • A pipe that has lost grade across most of its length.
  • A pipe that’s at the end of its functional life regardless of the single visible failure.

When we see those, we recommend full replacement or CIPP lining instead.

What a spot repair looks like

  1. Camera and locate. We pinpoint the failure on the surface, mark depth, and confirm the rest of the line is sound.
  2. Mark utilities. PA One Call (811) ticket pulled.
  3. Permit. Local municipality and PWSA where applicable.
  4. Excavation. A targeted hole, typically 4 by 6 to 6 by 10 feet, dug to the depth of the pipe (often 4 to 7 feet).
  5. Cut out the failed section. Usually 2 to 8 feet of bad pipe removed.
  6. Replace with new PVC (or cast iron, where code requires). Two transition couplings with the new section between them.
  7. Verify the result. Camera the repair from a cleanout to confirm flow, grade, and seal.
  8. Inspection. Municipal inspector verifies (where required).
  9. Backfill. Bedding, lifts of compacted soil, brought back to grade.
  10. Surface restoration. Per the restoration tier you selected.

Most spot repairs finish in a single day. Tight-access jobs or deep repairs can run two days.

Pricing

We present exact pricing in your home after a free in-home estimate. Spot repair is the lowest-investment sewer work that involves digging. Tiers below show relative investment, not real numbers.

  • Standard spot repair, 4 to 6 ft section, in grass: lower-mid tier ($$).
  • Spot repair with deeper excavation or hardscape disruption: mid tier ($$$).
  • Spot repair with driveway or sidewalk restoration: add a tier depending on the restoration scope.

Part of our process is presenting numbers in person, on paper, with the restoration tier and the warranty spelled out. No surprises mid-job.

Pittsburgh-specific notes

A few patterns we see often in spot-repair candidates:

Cast iron pipe with one rusted-through section. Cast iron tends to fail at the bottom of the pipe (where water flows continuously) but the top of the pipe can be intact for decades. A localized section that’s lost the bottom can be spot-repaired if the surrounding pipe is still sound.

Root-destroyed joint in clay pipe. A single clay joint where a tree root has cracked the bell connection. Sometimes the answer is to dig there, replace that one joint with a new PVC section and couplings, and leave the rest of the clay alone (if the rest is intact).

Settlement damage. Pittsburgh terrain shifts. A spot where the soil settled and crushed one length of pipe can often be repaired without disturbing the rest of the line.

Damage from prior excavation. Sometimes a utility contractor or a landscaper put a backhoe blade through the sewer line years ago, the homeowner never knew, and the slow leak created an underground problem. Spot repair at that one location often fixes it.

Contractor damage during driveway or addition work. Newer homes sometimes have a recent break at a known location. Spot repair is usually obvious.

What we won’t do

We won’t sell a spot repair if the camera shows the rest of the line is failing. That’s a band-aid that costs you twice. We’d rather walk you through a full replacement or a CIPP liner with a real warranty.

We also won’t spot-repair a section that can’t be properly bedded after the dig (very soft soil, high water table without dewatering scope, etc.). Doing the work badly is worse than doing it right with a larger scope.

What’s included with every Wahl spot repair

  • Pre-job camera and locate.
  • Permit and inspection coordination.
  • PA One Call (811) utility marks.
  • All excavation, new pipe and fittings, bedding, backfill.
  • Post-install camera verification.
  • Surface restoration per the tier you select.
  • Written workmanship warranty.
  • Photo documentation.

When spot repair becomes full replacement

Sometimes a spot repair turns into a bigger job once we have the hole open. The pipe we expected to be sound on either side turns out to be in worse shape than the camera showed. When that happens:

  • We stop and call you.
  • We show you what we’re seeing, in person or by photo.
  • We give you the options: extend the repair, full replacement, switch to CIPP lining of the remainder.
  • You decide. No surprise charges. No work happens past the original scope without you saying yes.

This is rare but it does happen. We’d rather slow down than do something you didn’t approve.

Financing

Spot repair is the most affordable sewer work that involves digging, but it still isn’t pocket change for most households. Financing through GoodLeap, Synchrony, Wells Fargo, and EasyPay. Approval in about two minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need a spot repair or a full replacement?

Camera inspection. We see exactly what’s wrong, where, and whether the rest of the line is sound. We won’t recommend spot repair if the rest of the pipe is failing.

How long does the spot repair last?

The new PVC section is rated for 80-plus years. The surrounding existing pipe lasts as long as it would have anyway; spot repair doesn’t extend the life of the rest of the line, but it doesn’t shorten it either.

Will my homeowner’s insurance pay?

Sometimes, for sudden damage (a tree root finally splitting a joint, a vehicle collapsing a buried section). Not usually for gradual deterioration. We provide all documentation you need to file the claim.

Do I need to be home for the work?

For excavation and the camera verification, yes (we want to walk the job with you before and after). For most of the middle of the day, no. We’ll text or call when we hit milestones.

How much yard will be torn up?

A typical spot repair opens a hole 4 by 6 to 6 by 10 feet at the surface, then we restore it. Smaller than a full open-cut replacement.

Can you do spot repair under my driveway?

Yes, but it adds cost for concrete or asphalt cutting and restoration. We tell you the full restoration cost up front. Sometimes a small driveway disruption is worth it; sometimes you’d rather go with trenchless CIPP to save the surface.

What’s the difference between this and a drain cleaning?

Drain cleaning clears obstructions (roots, grease, paper) from inside the pipe. Spot repair fixes a damaged section of the pipe itself. Drain cleaning is what we do first to clear the problem and run the camera; spot repair is the structural fix if the camera shows damage.
