Drain cleaning and drain opening in Pittsburgh

A clogged drain is the most common plumbing call there is, and the one most often done badly. We bring the right machine for the pipe you actually have, clear the line, and then tell you whether it was a one-time clog or a sign of something structural. Same-day appointments most days.

A clogged drain is the most common plumbing call there is. It is also the call most often done badly, because the temptation is to punch a hole through the blockage, collect the check, and leave. That works until the next time, which for a lot of Pittsburgh homes is about six months later.

Our approach is simple. Match the machine to the pipe, clear the line properly, and then be honest with you about why it clogged. Sometimes the answer is that a kid flushed something. Sometimes the answer is that there are roots in your sewer lateral and this will happen every single year until the pipe gets fixed. You deserve to know which one you are dealing with.

Drain opening versus drain cleaning

People use these terms interchangeably. They are not the same job, and the difference matters to your bill.

  • Drain opening means restoring flow. We get the water moving again. This is what you want at 9pm on a Tuesday when the kitchen sink is full.
  • Drain cleaning means restoring the pipe. We remove the buildup off the pipe wall so the full original diameter is back in service. This is what keeps it from happening again.

Most calls start as a drain opening. Whether it needs to become a drain cleaning depends on what we find, and we will tell you before we do the extra work, not after.

Is it one fixture or is it your main line?

This is the single most useful thing a homeowner can figure out before calling, and it changes the whole scope of the job. Signs it is a branch line serving one fixture:

  • Only one sink, tub, shower, or toilet is affected.
  • Everything else in the house drains normally.
  • It came on gradually over weeks or months.

Signs it is your main sewer line, which is a bigger and more urgent problem:

  • More than one fixture is slow or backing up, especially on different floors.
  • The basement floor drain backs up when you run the washing machine or take a shower.
  • A toilet gurgles when the washer drains or the tub empties. That is air being pushed back through the trap by water that has nowhere to go.
  • Sewage smell in the basement with no obvious source.
  • It gets worse after heavy rain. A classic root and crack signature in older Pittsburgh laterals.

If you are seeing the second list, tell whoever answers the phone. We will send the mainline equipment and the camera on the first trip instead of making you wait for a second visit.

What we actually use, and why

Sectional machines for branch lines

Kitchen branches, lavatory drains, tubs, showers, laundry tubs, and floor drains. These are small-diameter lines, usually under two inches, often with tight turns and older fittings. A sectional machine with the correct cable and cutter head for that pipe clears it without beating up the fittings. Sending oversized equipment down a small old line is how plumbers put holes in pipes.

Mainline cabling for sewer laterals

Your sewer lateral is the pipe running from the house to the city main. It is typically four or six inches. Mainline machines carry heavier cable and cutter heads sized to scrape the full diameter, including root cutters when roots are the problem.

Hydro jetting when cabling is not enough

A cable cuts a channel through the blockage. High-pressure water scours the pipe wall back to bare pipe. For grease, scale, sludge, and heavy root mass, jetting is the honest answer. Read how hydro jetting works and when it is the wrong call.

A camera when the story does not add up

If a line has clogged more than once, or if the cable hits something solid at a consistent distance every time, the clog is a symptom and not the problem. A sewer camera inspection shows whether you have roots, a crack, a joint separation, a belly holding standing water, or a collapse.

The chemical drain cleaner conversation

We get asked about the bottles from the hardware store constantly, so here is the straight answer. They sometimes work on a soft soap or hair clog in a bathroom sink. They do essentially nothing for grease, roots, or anything in your main line, because the product never reaches the blockage in a meaningful concentration.

What they do reliably is sit in the trap generating heat, which is hard on older pipe and on the rubber components in your fixtures, and create a caustic pool that the technician then has to work in. If you have already used one, just tell us. Nobody is going to lecture you. We just want to know before we open the trap.

Pricing

We present exact pricing on the call when you schedule, and the technician confirms the flat-rate number before any work starts. Tiers below show relative investment, not real numbers.

  • Branch line drain opening (single fixture): entry tier ($).
  • Main line drain opening (sewer lateral through a clean-out): mid tier ($$).
  • Main line opening without a clean-out (toilet pull or roof vent access required): mid tier ($$), adjusts with access.
  • Hydro jetting: mid to upper tier ($$ to $$$), depends on line length and what is in the pipe.
  • Camera inspection added to a drain call: entry tier ($), and typically credited back if you proceed with repair work within 30 days.

Wahl Club members get drain opening included. No weekend or after-hours surcharge games on any of it.

What is included on every drain call

  • Flat-rate price confirmed in writing before we start.
  • The right machine for your pipe, brought on the first trip.
  • Drop cloths and shoe covers. We clean up the work area.
  • A flow test after the clear, so you see it working before we leave.
  • An honest read on whether this was a one-time clog or a recurring structural issue.
  • Written workmanship guarantee.

When a drain call turns into a bigger conversation

Sometimes we clear the line and the camera shows a pipe that is going to keep failing. When that happens, we walk you through the options in order of cost, cheapest first:

No obligation and no pressure. Plenty of our customers get the drain cleared, take the video, and decide to wait a year. That is a completely reasonable choice and we would rather you make it with real information.

Frequently asked questions

Can you come out today?

Most days, yes. Drain calls are the bulk of what our plumbing side does and we hold capacity for them. If your line is actively backing up into the house, say so when you call and we treat it as an emergency. We answer the phone 24/7.

How long does a drain opening take?

A single-fixture branch line is usually 30 to 60 minutes on site. A main line through an existing clean-out is typically one to two hours. If we have to create access, or if the line needs jetting after cabling, it runs longer and we tell you that before we start.

Will you make a mess?

Drain work is dirty work, so we plan for it. Drop cloths, shoe covers, and a bucket under every joint we open. We clean the work area before we leave. If a line has already backed up onto a floor, tell us on the phone so we bring the right cleanup gear.

My drain keeps clogging in the same spot. Why?

Because something in the pipe is catching debris, and cabling it clears the debris without removing the cause. Roots at a joint, a crack, an offset where two sections have shifted, or a belly holding standing water will all do this. A camera inspection settles it in under an hour and stops you from paying for the same drain call every year.

Do you charge extra for nights and weekends?

No. We do not stack trip charges, diagnostic fees, and weekend fees on top of the bill. One upfront flat-rate price, the same way we would quote it on a Tuesday morning.

Is drain opening really included with the Wahl Club?

Yes. Drain opening is included in Wahl Club membership along with your recurring maintenance visits. It is one of the most-used benefits in the whole program.

Can a clogged drain damage my house?

A slow bathroom sink, no. A main line backing up, yes, and quickly. Sewage on a finished basement floor is a remediation problem on top of a plumbing problem. If water is coming up through a floor drain, stop running water in the house and call us.

Do you do commercial drain cleaning?

Yes. Restaurants, apartment buildings, and retail. Commercial kitchen grease lines are a jetting job almost every time, and many of our restaurant customers keep us on a scheduled interval so they never close for a backup. Wahl’s commercial dispatch handles it.
