Friedrich has been an American HVAC brand since 1883. The current Friedrich mini-split line is manufactured by Rheem, and Wahl carries it through our Rheem Pro Partner relationship. If you want a mini split with the design and warranty backing of one of the largest HVAC manufacturers in North America, at a price point typically below Mitsubishi, Friedrich is the line we point you to.

Where Friedrich fits

Friedrich isn’t the budget bargain-bin mini split. It also isn’t the absolute premium tier. It sits in the sweet spot where most Pittsburgh homeowners actually shop: solid engineering, real warranty coverage, parts available locally through the Rheem distribution network, and a price that doesn’t require a second mortgage.

We recommend Friedrich most often for:

• Additions and bonus rooms where the room needs reliable comfort, not the absolute peak in efficiency.
• Rental and investment properties where the owner wants something that will last 12-plus years without paying the Mitsubishi premium.
• Sunrooms and four-season rooms that need a single head doing one job well.
• Budget-conscious whole-home retrofits where the multi-zone count drives total cost up and a tier down from Mitsubishi makes the project pencil.
• Homeowners who already have a Rheem furnace, AC, or water heater and want everything serviced through the same dealer warranty network.

What Wahl installs

Friedrich’s lineup overlaps with most of Mitsubishi’s residential range:

Single-zone systems. One outdoor unit, one indoor head. 9,000 to 36,000 BTU. Inverter-driven, variable-capacity compressors. Most homes need a 9,000, 12,000, or 18,000 BTU head for a single room.

Multi-zone systems. One outdoor unit, two to five indoor heads. Most multi-zone Friedrich installs we do run two to four heads. Larger multi-zone applications (five-plus heads) typically push customers toward Mitsubishi, where the multi-zone outdoor lineup is broader.

Head styles. Wall-mount (the standard), ceiling cassette, concealed ducted. Most Friedrich installs use the wall-mount.

Heating capacity. Friedrich’s premium FreshAire and FloatingAir Pro lines maintain rated heat down to 5 degrees and continue producing heat to negative 4 to negative 13 depending on model. Pittsburgh-capable.

Why we sell it as a Rheem Pro Partner

Wahl is a Rheem Pro Partner, the top dealer tier in the Rheem distribution network. The same status that gives us extended Rheem furnace and water heater warranties extends to Friedrich on the mini-split side. What that means for you:

• Extended warranty registration. Pro Partner installs register longer parts and compressor coverage than non-Pro-Partner installers can offer.
• Faster parts access. Rheem-network parts come through Robertson Heating Supply, our primary distributor. Most parts are local-stock, which means service callbacks resolve in days, not weeks.
• Direct technical support. When a callback or warranty question requires factory engagement, Pro Partners get a separate support channel.
• Predictable serviceability. Rheem-network technicians know the Friedrich line because it’s now part of the Rheem family.

Install process

Same install rigor we run on every mini split:

1. Walkthrough. Head locations chosen with you. Line-set routing planned. Outdoor unit placement confirmed (clearance from windows, doors, walkways).
2. Outdoor unit set. Pad or wall bracket. Code clearance. Condensate routed.
3. Indoor head mounted. Mounting plate, wall penetration, line-set and condensate run cleanly. Exterior line-set covered with paintable line-set cover so the install looks finished, not industrial.
4. Electrical. Dedicated circuit pulled. In-house on most jobs.
5. Evacuation and refrigerant charging. Multi-stage vacuum, factory-spec charge, no shortcuts. This is the make-or-break step on every mini split, and it gets the same treatment whether the unit is an entry-tier single zone or a flagship multi-zone build.
6. Commissioning. Every head started, every setpoint and mode tested, every remote paired and labeled.
7. Walkthrough with the homeowner. We show you the controls, leave you the manuals, take photos of the install for your records.
8. Permit close-out. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector. You don’t.

Pricing

We present exact pricing in your home after a free in-home estimate. Friedrich typically runs 10 to 20% below comparable Mitsubishi configurations, install for install. A few benchmark tiers:

• Single-zone (9,000 to 18,000 BTU) installed: entry tier ($$).
• Two-zone (two heads on one outdoor) installed: lower-mid tier ($$).
• Three to four zone installed: mid tier ($$$).

Final investment depends on electrical, line-set routing, head styles, and any structural or aesthetic accommodations. Part of our process is presenting numbers in person, on paper, side by side, with both standard and Wahl Club member rates shown.

Financing and rebates

• Federal heat pump tax credits (25C, up to $2,000 on qualifying high-efficiency units).
• Duquesne Light rebates may apply.
• GoodLeap, Synchrony, Wells Fargo, and EasyPay financing through Wahl.
• Manufacturer-direct promotions seasonally.

When we don’t recommend Friedrich

We’re upfront about this. There are projects where Friedrich isn’t the right call:

• High-head-count multi-zone (five-plus heads). Mitsubishi’s multi-zone outdoor lineup is broader and the system design typically pencils better.
• Commercial VRF projects. Friedrich doesn’t compete with Mitsubishi City Multi in the commercial space. Different category of equipment.
• The absolute top end of efficiency. Mitsubishi’s hyper-efficient Hyper-Heat units edge Friedrich on cold-weather rated performance and on long-term energy bills. If you’re optimizing for 20-year operating cost in a primary-heat application, we usually steer you to Mitsubishi.

If we’re not the right answer for your project, we say so. The point of an option presentation is matching the right system to your home, not selling you up to the most expensive box on the truck.
