Natural gas is the most common heating fuel in Pittsburgh, and the standard 80% AFUE gas furnace is the most common furnace we install. It is the workhorse of Western Pennsylvania heating. Eighty percent of the gas you burn becomes heat in your home, twenty percent leaves through the flue. The technology is mature, the parts are widely available, and a properly sized unit will run reliably for fifteen to twenty winters.
Wahl installs Rheem 80% AFUE gas furnaces as our primary line (Rheem Pro Partner, top dealer tier) and we also install Trane and Ameristar where the application makes sense. Every install includes Manual J sizing, full ductwork inspection, new flue connection where required, and commissioning before we leave.
When a standard 80% gas furnace is the right call
The 80% tier is the right answer when your priority is upfront cost, simplicity, and proven reliability. It is the most common Pittsburgh install for good reason.
- Rental properties and second homes
- Homeowners planning to move within five to seven years
- Replacements for older furnaces in homes without a condensate drain run nearby
- Homes with existing metal flue and chimney venting (no PVC needed)
- Lower upfront budget situations where high-efficiency does not pencil
If you are going to live in the house for ten or more years, we would also walk you through the high-efficiency option and let you compare gas bills against the price difference. Many Pittsburgh homeowners pencil better at 90%+ once they see the long-run math.
What we install

- New thermostat (programmable or smart) with every install
- New flue connection or B-vent inspection
What goes in a Wahl 80% gas furnace install
Every gas furnace install starts with a load calculation, not a thumbnail. Here is what gets done before we leave your house:
- Manual J load calculation based on square footage, insulation, windows, exposure, and infiltration
- Static pressure test of existing ductwork to confirm the furnace blower can deliver design airflow
- Combustion analyzer reading on the new furnace at startup (gas valve pressure, CO output, flue temperature)
- Temperature rise check across the heat exchanger (must fall inside the data plate range)
- Gas pressure verification at the manifold under firing conditions
- New filter, fresh thermostat batteries, photo of the data plate stored in your file
- Walk-through with the homeowner on the new thermostat, filter location, filter size, and what the furnace should and should not sound like
Common 80% gas furnace problems in Pittsburgh
- Flame sensor coated with carbon, furnace lights and shuts off (the single most common service call)
- Igniter cracked or open (no flame on startup)
- Pressure switch stuck, code on the board, no fire
- Inducer motor bearing noise or seizure
- Limit switch trip from a dirty filter or undersized return
- Gas valve failure (less common but possible)
- Cracked heat exchanger (this is a replacement, not a repair, carbon monoxide risk)
- Control board failure after power surges
Our trucks carry the common Pittsburgh parts. Most repairs are same-day.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an 80% and a 96% furnace?
Efficiency. An 80% furnace converts 80% of the gas you burn into heat in your house. A 96% converts 96%. The 96% costs more upfront, requires PVC venting and a condensate drain, but the gas savings stack year after year. We can run your specific numbers during the quote.
Will an 80% furnace work in a really cold Pittsburgh winter?
Yes, as long as it is properly sized. Pittsburgh design temperatures hit zero and below in the worst weeks. Standard 80% AFUE furnaces are designed for exactly this climate. The issue is not efficiency tier, it is sizing.
How loud is a standard gas furnace?
A single-stage 80% furnace running at full output is noticeable in a quiet house. A two-stage 80% is quieter at low fire. Variable-speed blowers cut the sound further. If quiet matters, ask about a variable-speed model when we quote.
Can I keep my existing thermostat?
Most modern thermostats work with most 80% gas furnaces. We always replace the thermostat batteries and check the wiring on install day. If your existing thermostat is a mercury bulb or pre-2010 unit, we recommend a new one for safety and accuracy.
How much does an 80% gas furnace install cost?
Pricing varies with size, ductwork condition, flue work, and whether AC is included. We give you a real number on paper with two or three options shown side by side. Member pricing is approximately 15% off standard. No phone-only ballparks, we look at the house.
Do you handle the gas line work?
Yes. We are a full-service plumbing contractor in addition to HVAC, which means new gas service, line extensions, leak repair, and appliance connections all happen with our crew, not a subcontractor.
How long does the install take?
A standard 80% furnace swap is one day, typically six to ten hours depending on flue work and ductwork modifications. We protect the floors, clean up the work area, and walk through the new system before we leave.
