Variable-speed furnaces in Pittsburgh

A variable-speed furnace is the top tier of forced-air heating. Instead of a single-stage furnace that runs at 100% output every time it fires, a variable-speed unit modulates both the burner and the blower across a wide range, often 40% to 100% in small steps. The result in a Pi…

A variable-speed furnace is the top tier of forced-air heating. Instead of a single-stage furnace that runs at 100% output every time it fires, a variable-speed unit modulates both the burner and the blower across a wide range, often 40% to 100% in small steps. The result in a Pittsburgh home is heat that comes on quietly, runs longer at a lower output, and holds the thermostat setpoint without the on-off cycling that makes other furnaces feel drafty.

Wahl installs Rheem variable-speed furnaces as our primary line (Rheem Pro Partner, top dealer tier) and they are the natural upgrade path for homeowners who want the best comfort, the quietest operation, and the highest seasonal efficiency. They pair with zoning, advanced IAQ, and smart thermostats in a way that single-stage furnaces never can.

What makes a variable-speed furnace different

Three things, all of which you feel in the house:

Modulating gas valve. The burner fires at the lowest output that will hold the thermostat. On a 35-degree Pittsburgh evening, a single-stage furnace fires at 100%, hits setpoint in five minutes, shuts off, and lets the house drift down. A variable-speed unit fires at 40% or 50% and runs for thirty minutes, holding setpoint without cycling.

ECM blower with variable speeds. The blower ramps up and down with the burner, moves air at the right velocity for the heat load, and runs near-silent at the low end. The same blower can be told to run continuously at a low speed for better air mixing and IAQ.

Communicating controls. The furnace, the thermostat, and (if equipped) the variable-speed coil talk to each other. The system reads its own status and tunes itself for the conditions. A homeowner sees this as a furnace that just works.

When variable-speed is the right call

This tier is the right answer when comfort is the priority and you plan to stay in the house long enough to see the payback. Specifically:

  • Two-story or multi-zone Pittsburgh homes where one floor is always too cold or too hot
  • Older homes with leaky envelopes where short-cycling makes the place feel drafty
  • Homes with allergy or asthma concerns (continuous low-speed blower with a media filter or REME HALO is a real IAQ upgrade)
  • Homeowners who want the quietest possible furnace
  • Homes with humidity control or dehumidifier integration goals
  • Pairing with a high-efficiency Bosch cold-climate heat pump for a dual-fuel hybrid system

What we install

  • Rheem Prestige variable-speed modulating gas furnaces
  • Rheem two-stage variable-speed (mid tier between single-stage and full modulating)
  • Trane variable-speed where the customer is brand-specific
  • Matched variable-speed coils and outdoor condensers for full system communication
  • Communicating smart thermostats (Aprilaire, Honeywell, ecobee-compatible)
  • Zoning systems (motorized dampers, multi-thermostat) where the home calls for it

What a Wahl variable-speed install looks like

The install is the same physical scope as a standard furnace, but the commissioning is more detailed because the equipment can do more.

  1. Manual J load calculation and Manual D duct check
  2. Confirm existing ductwork can deliver the airflow the variable-speed blower expects (often the limiting factor)
  3. Set up the modulating controls and confirm communication with the thermostat
  4. Run combustion analyzer at low fire, mid fire, and high fire
  5. Verify temperature rise across the heat exchanger at each stage
  6. Program the thermostat for the customer’s schedule and preferences
  7. Walk through the homeowner on how the system will behave (it sounds different than a single-stage, you will notice)

Common questions about variable-speed before buying

Is it worth the upcharge over a standard 80% or 96% single-stage? For most Pittsburgh homeowners staying ten years or more, yes. The comfort difference is real and immediate, the gas savings are meaningful, and the seasonal IAQ improvement from continuous low-speed blower is a quiet upgrade that adds up over years.

Does it work with my existing ductwork? Usually yes, sometimes with modifications. Variable-speed blowers can move more air through restrictive ductwork than single-stage motors, but if your ductwork is severely undersized, we will tell you and quote the duct modifications separately.

Will the electric bill go up? No, the opposite. ECM blowers use roughly half the electricity of a standard PSC blower per cubic foot of air moved. The blower running longer at low speed is still cheaper than the old blower running at full speed and short-cycling.

Frequently asked questions

How is a variable-speed furnace different from a two-stage?

A two-stage furnace fires at low or high, two output levels. A true variable-speed (also called modulating) furnace fires at many output levels, sometimes 40 levels or more between low and high. Two-stage is the middle tier, variable-speed is the top tier.

Is the furnace also called modulating?

Yes. “Variable-speed” usually refers to the blower, “modulating” refers to the burner, and the top-tier furnaces do both. Manufacturers use the terms differently in their marketing. Functionally, the top-tier units modulate gas input and modulate blower speed together.

How much quieter is it?

Materially quieter. A variable-speed Rheem on low fire is roughly the noise level of a refrigerator. A single-stage on high fire is closer to a bathroom exhaust fan. If quiet is one of your top reasons for upgrading, variable-speed is the right call.

Will I save on gas?

Yes, in two ways. First, the unit itself is typically 96%+ AFUE, which is more efficient than an 80% by definition. Second, modulating output means less short-cycling and less wasted gas on startup. Real-world Pittsburgh savings depend on your starting point and your gas usage pattern.

Does it work with a smart thermostat like Nest or ecobee?

The communicating versions work best with the manufacturer’s matching thermostat. Standard 24V thermostats including Nest and ecobee will run the variable-speed furnace, but you may lose access to some of the modulating features. We will explain the tradeoffs during the quote.

Can I add zoning later?

Yes, but adding it during the original install is cheaper and cleaner than retrofitting. If you have a problem floor or a problem room, ask about zoning when we quote.

How long do variable-speed furnaces last?

Same target as any quality gas furnace, fifteen to twenty years with annual maintenance. The more sophisticated electronics mean there are more potential failure points, which is why factory-trained installation and Rheem Pro Partner support matters.
