How you do one thing is how you do everything
Clean truck, clean uniform, on time, pick up the garbage. Here is why the little things tell you everything about a contractor.
How you do one thing is how you do everything. That is the standard I hammer hardest with every new tech: show up on time, be in a clean uniform, keep your truck clean, be polite, and pick up the garbage off the ground, because you are constantly being interviewed. Standards are all high or all low, and we choose to be all high.
On a random Tuesday, that means major-league standards for everyone. My own nephew showed up 40 minutes late one morning, got written up, and got sent home. When something goes wrong on a job, we do not sweep it under the rug, we fix it.
The one standard I hammer hardest
If I could only teach a new technician one thing, it is this: how you do one thing is how you do everything. Showing up on time. Being in a clean uniform. Cleaning out your truck. Being polite. Picking the garbage up off the ground when you see it. None of those sound like plumbing or HVAC, but they are the whole game.
Here is what I tell every new person. You are constantly being interviewed. Every homeowner who watches you walk up the driveway is forming an opinion before you say a word. Our standards are all high or all low, and we choose to be all high. You do not get to be sloppy on the small stuff and excellent on the big stuff. It does not work that way. The guy who leaves trash in your yard is the same guy who will skip the triple evacuation when he thinks nobody is looking.
The little things that tell you everything
- On time. Your time matters, and being late tells you we do not respect it.
- Clean uniform. If a tech does not care how he shows up, ask yourself how much he cares about your system.
- Clean truck. A messy truck is a messy install waiting to happen.
- Polite, and picks up the garbage. Respect for your home is not optional.
What does the Wahl of Excellence mean on a random Tuesday?
This is one I am genuinely proud of. The Wahl of Excellence is not a poster on the wall, even though it is literally painted across our warehouse. It starts with answering why we exist: to protect our community from the obvious and hidden hazards in their homes. Community matters to us across multiple generations, and we have built a legacy rooted in design excellence, safety, and comfort, with continuous improvement built into our DNA. In an industry that lacks mandated expertise, we fill that gap by investing in our team.
So on a random Tuesday, what does it actually mean? It means every customer is important, and every interaction gets the same high-level standard. It means we hold ourselves to major-league standards.
The Tuesday my nephew got sent home
Let me give you a real example, because this is not theory. My nephew works for me, and one Tuesday he showed up 40 minutes late to work. When he got there, he got written up, and he got sent home. He is going to lose out on a full day’s worth of pay because he was late. Family or not, that is the standard. Late is unacceptable, and major-league standards apply to everybody.
What happens when something goes wrong?
Two more things the Wahl of Excellence means on a normal day. First, we are rapid response. We act quickly and proactively, so if a customer has an emergency on a Tuesday, we move things around to get it handled today. Second, and this is the big one, when something goes wrong on a job site, we do not sweep it under the rug. We take care of it. We approach every customer touch point with deliberate care and precision, we hold each other accountable, and it is everybody’s job to get the job done.
We do not just think of this as words on a wall. We live it. If you want to see the kind of team this builds, take a look at who we are, or if you want to be held to that standard yourself, we are always looking for the right people.
The quick version
- How you do one thing is how you do everything. The little things predict the big ones.
- On time, clean uniform, clean truck, polite, pick up the garbage. You are constantly being interviewed.
- Standards are all high or all low, and we choose all high.
- Major-league standards apply to everyone. My own nephew got written up and sent home for being 40 minutes late.
- When something goes wrong on a job, we do not sweep it under the rug. We fix it.
My nephew works for me, and one Tuesday he was 40 minutes late. He got written up and sent home, and he is losing a full day’s pay over it. Family or not, the standard is the standard.
How you do one thing is how you do everything. You are constantly being interviewed, and our standards are all high or all low. We choose all high.

What is the most important thing Wahl teaches a new technician?
How you do one thing is how you do everything. The first standard we hammer is the small stuff: show up on time, wear a clean uniform, keep your truck clean, be polite, and pick up the garbage. We tell every tech they are constantly being interviewed, because the little things predict how the big things get done.
What is the Wahl of Excellence?
It is the set of standards that define why we exist and how we behave. It starts with protecting our community from the obvious and hidden hazards in their homes, and it lives in major-league standards, rapid response, and never sweeping a problem under the rug. It is painted across our warehouse, but more importantly we live it on every job.
Does Wahl really hold family members to the same standard?
Yes. My own nephew showed up 40 minutes late one morning, got written up, and got sent home for the day. Major-league standards apply to everybody, family or not. That is the only way standards mean anything.
What does Wahl do when something goes wrong on a job?
We do not sweep it under the rug. When something goes wrong on a job site, we take care of it, because accountability is part of holding ourselves to a high standard. We approach every customer touch point with deliberate care, and it is everyone’s job to make it right.
How quickly does Wahl respond to emergencies?
We are built for rapid response. If a customer has an emergency, we act quickly and move things around to get it handled the same day whenever we can. Acting quickly and proactively is one of our core standards, not an exception we make for some customers and not others.
