Serving Crafton and the Carlynton communities

HVAC and plumbing services in Crafton, PA

A trolley line built Crafton. It carried people to downtown Pittsburgh, houses went up along it, and the service ended once the Fort Pitt Bridge was built without tracks on it. Those houses are still here, still cut into their hillsides, still needing heat, hot water, and drains that work. Wahl has worked on Pittsburgh homes of that vintage since 1980, family owned then and now run by the next generation. Call (412) 276-9245.

A heat pump carrying the whole winter

Heating services in Crafton, PA

The question we actually get here is whether a heat pump can be the heat, not a mild-weather helper that hands the house off to something else in January. It can. A heat pump does not make heat, it moves it, and there is energy in outdoor air to move all the way down to absolute zero. What decides whether it carries a Crafton winter is the design, not the calendar.

Two things change on an install in this borough. The first is outside. Lots sit close together and plenty of them are cut into a grade, so the outdoor unit lands in a narrow side yard within earshot of somebody's bedroom window. That is part of why we standardized on Bosch for cold climate. It is quiet, it is compact, and its pressure transducer ramps the compressor off the system's own internal pressures so the coil does not freeze, which is what lets us put more capacity out there than the house strictly needs. Here is why Bosch is our exclusive cold climate heat pump.

The second is inside, and it is electrical. A straight heat pump carries an electric backup heater kit, and that kit is also what holds the house during a defrost cycle. In an older home the panel is often the thing that sets the real scope of the job, so we look at it early instead of discovering it on install day.

Programming is the other place trouble hides, and it is most of what we find when we get called out to a heat pump already in the ground. The backup heat should add to the heat pump rather than replace it, because moving heat from outside costs a fraction of making it with electric resistance, and a control setup that shuts the cheap heat off the moment the expensive heat comes on will quietly cost you all winter. Furnaces are still most of what heats these houses, and all of it lives under heating.

  • A load calculation before anything else, because a heat pump that leans on its backup all season was usually undersized the day it went in
  • Controls set so the heat pump keeps running while the backup helps, and a heater kit sized to hold the house through a defrost cycle
  • A look at the electrical panel early, since in an older home it often sets the real scope of the job

The copper between the two halves

Air conditioning services in Crafton, PA

On an air conditioning changeout the outdoor unit and the indoor coil get all the attention. The quieter decision is the line set, meaning the pair of copper lines running between them, and on a hillside street in this borough it is not a small one.

Sometimes reusing it is the honest answer, and we will say so. If the lines are the right size for the new equipment, the insulation is still intact, the run is accessible, and the system never suffered a compressor burnout, we can pressure test that set, pull it into a deep vacuum, and put it back to work. There is no reason to sell you copper you do not need.

The times it has to come out are specific. Older R-22 systems ran on mineral oil, and today's refrigerants use a synthetic oil that does not get along with the residue left behind in those lines. A compressor that failed pushes acid and debris down that same path, so reusing that set is how a homeowner buys a second failure. And a line set that is undersized or oversized for the new equipment will never run right no matter how carefully everything else is done.

Grade matters here more than it would on a flat lot. When the condenser sits well below the indoor coil, or well above it, that vertical rise changes how oil finds its way back to the compressor, which makes it a real input into line sizing rather than an afterthought. Every joint gets brazed with nitrogen flowing through the pipe so the inside stays clean. Repair, replacement, and maintenance all sit under air conditioning.

  • You hear up front whether the line set is being reused or replaced, and the reason why, before anything is signed
  • A compressor burnout rules out reuse, full stop, because the contamination is already inside the pipe
  • Line sets buried in joist bays or run through plaster get a route conversation before the work starts, not a surprise on the day
  • Brittle suction line insulation gets replaced, because an uninsulated line sweats and drips onto whatever is underneath it
  • Nitrogen while brazing, a pressure test, and a micron gauge on the vacuum, since a slow leak looks perfectly fine for one summer

Telling scale apart from corrosion

Plumbing services in Crafton, PA

Scale is patient. It builds up where you cannot watch it, inside the aerator, the toilet fill valve, the dishwasher, the cartridges in your fixtures, and by the time a shower head is spraying sideways the minerals have been working on that house for years.

In homes of this vintage the symptom is ambiguous, and that is the part worth slowing down for. Weak flow at one fixture can be mineral buildup or it can be a corroded line, and those two problems have nothing in common and completely different fixes. A treatment system installed on the wrong diagnosis will not do a thing for a restricted pipe. So we test the water and look at the actual pipe before anybody starts talking about equipment.

When hardness really is the culprit, there are three ways at it. A softener uses a resin bed charged with a salt brine to physically pull the minerals out, which is the right call in specific situations, though it means sodium in your water and bags of salt to haul. A conditioner leaves the minerals in and stops them from sticking, either electromagnetically with Flow-Tech or through the salt-free citric acid approach Nuvo uses. Whole-home filtration like the Halo runs several stages, conditions the water, and backflushes itself. Here is how our CEO chooses between them.

Worth saying plainly: hardness is hard on the house, not a hazard to your health. The things worth filtering in Pittsburgh water for health reasons are a different list, chloramine and dissolved solids of uncertain makeup among them, and we would rather you read your own water quality report than take our word for it. Our licensed plumbers handle drains, leaks, fixtures, gas lines, and sewer and water line work. The treatment side lives on our water treatment page.

  • We test your water and inspect the pipe before recommending treatment equipment, because scale and corrosion can feel identical at the handle
  • Weak flow at one fixture and weak flow through the whole house point in different directions, and we sort out which one you have first

When the heater stands next to finished floor

Water heater services in Crafton, PA

A lot of basements in this borough got finished at some point over the last hundred years, and the water heater ended up boxed into a closet, tucked under a stair, or standing against the wall of what is now a family room. That single fact changes what a failure costs you.

Tanks rarely let go all at once. They seep first, usually at a seam or a fitting. In an open basement that shows up as a damp patch on the floor you happen to notice the following week. Behind a finished wall, the first evidence is a stain on the drywall or a baseboard that has started to cup, and by then the water has been somewhere it does not belong for quite a while.

A pan is only as good as its drain. A pan sitting under a heater with nowhere to send water holds a couple of gallons and then spills onto the same floor you were trying to protect. So the real question is always where the water goes: gravity to a floor drain or a laundry standpipe when the layout allows it, a pumped route when it does not, and a leak sensor sitting in the pan so you find out at the first cup instead of the fiftieth gallon. In finished space we also want the unit genuinely reachable, because a heater you have to dismantle a closet to get at is a heater nobody ever services.

None of that makes a tank immune. It buys you time and gives the water a path, which is the difference between drying a floor and replacing one. You get a straight answer on repair versus replacement either way, and the full range is on our water heater services page.

  • A pan with no drain path is a formality, so we plan where the water goes before the tank gets set
  • A leak sensor in the pan, so a slow seep announces itself long before it reaches drywall
  • Clearance and service access designed in at install, not discovered the first time the unit needs work
  • A pumped route for the pan when the layout has no gravity path to a floor drain or laundry standpipe

Where the borough line is the city line

Working in Crafton and next door

Crafton is its own borough, but much of its boundary is the Pittsburgh city line, which means a street can turn into Crafton Heights, Westwood, Oakwood, or East Carnegie without much announcement. Those are city neighborhoods rather than parts of Crafton, and we work all of them, along with Ingram right next door.

Across Chartiers Creek to the west and southwest sit Thornburg and Rosslyn Farms, and Rosslyn Farms shares the Carlynton School District with Crafton and Carnegie. Crafton Elementary is inside the borough. The junior senior high is out in Robinson Township. We take care of more than 200 homes in the Crafton area, so we are in most of those places in a normal week.

St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, and the original Crafton Elementary School building all went up in the early nineteen hundreds, which lines up with the housing that filled in around them, most of it built before World War Two. Old homes are not a problem to us, they are the work. Call (412) 276-9245 and tell us what the house is doing. If it cannot wait until morning, we run 24/7 emergency service.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Can a heat pump be the only source of heat in a Crafton house this old?

Yes, and we do it. What decides it is not the age of the house, it is whether the system was sized off a real load calculation and set up to run the way it was designed to run. Cold-climate equipment can be given more outdoor capacity than the house strictly needs, so it has muscle on the worst nights and ramps itself down the rest of the season. When a heat pump leaves somebody with a bad story, what sits behind it is almost always an undersized unit with an undersized electric backup kit, and that is a design problem rather than a heat pump problem.

Our condenser sits well below the indoor coil because of the slope of the lot. Does that change an air conditioning replacement?

It does, and it is one of the first things we measure. The vertical distance between the outdoor unit and the coil is a genuine input into how the refrigerant lines get sized, because oil has to make it back to the compressor against that rise. On a flat lot it rarely comes up. On a hillside street it comes up constantly, and it is one more reason an old line set that worked with the old equipment is not automatically right for the new.

How do I tell whether hard water is ruining my fixtures or whether the pipe itself is the problem?

Often you cannot tell from the symptom, which is exactly why we do not guess at it. Weak flow at one faucet and weak flow through the whole house point in different directions, and mineral buildup and interior corrosion can feel the same at the handle. We test the water and look at the real pipe, then tell you which one you have. If it turns out to be hardness, we will walk you through softening, conditioning, and whole-home filtration, and be honest that the salt-free routes are where we lean.

My water heater sits in a finished room in the basement. What should I be doing differently?

Assume it will seep before it ever bursts, and build for that. That means a pan that actually drains somewhere rather than just sitting there, a sensor in the pan, and enough clearance that the unit can be serviced without taking a closet apart. It is a small amount of extra work at install time, and it is the whole difference between drying a floor and replacing one.

Since Crafton's border is mostly the Pittsburgh city line, do you work the neighborhoods on the other side of it?

Yes. Crafton Heights, Westwood, Oakwood, and East Carnegie are Pittsburgh city neighborhoods rather than pieces of Crafton, and we are in them the same as we are in the borough. Same with Ingram next door, Carnegie, and Thornburg and Rosslyn Farms across Chartiers Creek. Worth knowing that ZIP 15205 does not stop at the borough line either, it carries on into Pittsburgh's west end, so a Crafton mailing address and the borough itself are not always the same thing.
