Troubleshooting Your Clogged Drains

Troubleshooting Your Clogged Drains

Clogged drains are a common, but a frustrating problem for homeowners. These tips will help you better understand how to get rid of your clogged drains and restore your home’s plumbing.

Troubleshooting Clogs:

  • Sink – Most of these clogs can be cleared with a plunger. Take a small plunger and work it up and down several times before pulling it off.
  • Bathtub – Bathtub clogs tend to build up over an extended period of time. First, try to unclog the drain with a plunger. If that doesn’t work, try using a cable auger. Feed the cable in and keep cranking until the cable passes all the way through the p-trap.
  • Toilet – Toilet clogs tend to occur in the up-curving part of your trap. While a plunger may provide enough power to clear it, it is more likely that you will have to use a closet auger. Place the auger into the bowl with the bent tip aiming up. Continue cranking until you’ve dispensed the entire cable and flush the toilet to clear out the pipe. If it still appears slow, try repeating the auger.
  • Floor Drain – Floor drains are typically tough blockages. You’ll need an electric power auger to completely clear this clog.
