Signs You Need a New Water Heater

Nothing gets the day going like a nice, hot shower in the morning. But that may not be possible if your hot water heater isn’t working properly. On a good day, that can mean a cold shower. On a bad day, it can mean major damage to your home and wallet. Before you get stuck with that bad day situation, see if you’ve noticed any of these signs that you need a new water heater.

Leaks are never something to ignore when it comes to your water heater. If you notice moisture, mold, or mildew around the bottom of your unit, you may have a problem. Slow leaks can cause structural damage to your home, while sudden leaks can spew gallons upon gallons of water into your home. If you have a leak, your safest bet is a replacement.

Age

Everything has a shelf life, including your water heater. If you’ve had your unit for more than 10 years, it’s probably time to get a new one or set up a regular inspection schedule to be done at least twice a year. If you have no clue how old your unit, it’s best to simply replace it.

Strange Taste or Rust

If you notice that your hot water smells or taste like iron or that it’s coming out with a reddish-brown color, that’s a telltale sign that the inside of your unit is corroding. This is essentially impossible to stop or reverse, so you’ll need a new water heater.

Water Temperature Issues

If it’s taking 15 minutes for hot water to come out of your shower head or the handle is cranked to scalding hot and you’re only getting lukewarm water, you may have a problem with your heating element or burner. Repairs might work, but if your tank is on the older side, a replacement may be more worth your money.
