How to Detect Carbon Monoxide

They call it the silent killer for a reason. Odorless, colorless, and tasteless, carbon monoxide can seep into your home and cause your family health problems without you even realizing it. Even though most homes are required to have carbon monoxide detectors, it’s important to know how to notice a potential leak in your home.

Check High-Risk Areas

Because of its lack of noticeable qualities, carbon monoxide can be hard to detect, so it’s important to start carbon-monoxide-wahl-family-heating-cooling-plumbingchecking for leaks by looking at typical areas they would occur. Make sure your appliances are well-ventilated, since using them in enclosed spaces can lead to dangerous emissions (i.e. an idling car in your garage.) Also inspect your gas lines for any tears, holes, or other damage that could result in carbon monoxide leaks.

Check for Symptoms

Those suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning often have flu-like symptoms, indigestion, headaches, nausea, and lightheadedness. Since these are all symptoms of regular illnesses, check to see who has them. One person’s symptoms may not be indicative of CO poisoning, but an entire household having those symptoms probably is.

Check Your Home

Your home itself could give you some clues if carbon monoxide is present. A stale, stuffy smell in your home is always a solid warning sign, as is a burning odor. That smell might not be from the CO itself, but it could be the result of other harmful gasses leaking into your home from malfunctioning appliances. Watch your gas stove for problems as well. Be wary if the pilot light is constantly going on and if the normally-blue flames are turning yellow, as this could also be a sign of leaking carbon monoxide.

CO presence is a serious problem that can dangerously affect your family, so check your detector regularly to ensure it is working properly. If you’re in need of a new carbon monoxide detector, call Wahl Family, Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing. We’ve been serving the Pittsburgh metro area since 1980, so you can trust us with all your home service needs. For more information, call us at 412-276-9245.

Prepping Your AC for Spring

After a rough winter, it’s surprising to see the spring weather getting so warm so quickly.  Soon enough, it will be time to turn on your AC to help deal with the burning summer heat. Since you shouldn’t (read: can’t) just flip a switch and start up your unit after so many months of having it off, follow these tips for prepping your AC for spring.

Replace the Filters

This is the easiest step. If your filters are dirty or clogged, your unit won’t be able to run efficiently, if at all, and will end up costing you more in energy bills. Not to mention, you’ll be circulating dust to your home. Replace your filters before you start up your AC.

prepping-your-ac-for-spring-wahl-family-heating-cooling-plumbingClean the Condenser Coils

On central AC units, the condenser is usually located outside and looks like a giant fan inside a metal box with grilles on the side. The coils are under the fan, so remove the grilles, and use a soft brush on a vacuum to get debris off of the coils. It’s very important to not bend the fins, so you may want to call the professionals for this job.

Clean Away Debris

Scoop out leaves that may be on or in your unit, and use a vacuum and rag to clean the fan’s blades. Oil any motorized parts, reassemble the condenser, and cut away any weeds that may interfere with the airflow of your AC.

Check the Coolant Lines

The refrigerator pipes that run from your air handler to your condenser are usually wrapped in foam insulation to prevent energy waste. If you notice any areas where the foam is torn, worn down, or missing, replace it by wrapping the lines with foam insulation tape.

If you’re prepping your AC for spring and notice it isn’t running properly, contact Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing. We can perform AC maintenance or repairs for you in a timely manner, so you can stay cool in your home. For HVAC help in your home, call us at 412-276-9245.

Saving Energy in Spring

Spring is finally here! Well, it finally feels like spring at least. While you might be thrilled to finally be able to go outside without wearing 12 layers of clothing, you might also be worried about your energy bills. Most homeowners think warmer weather means cranking the AC and getting higher energy bills each month, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Follow these tips for saving energy in your home this spring.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

This can lower your heating and cooling bills by letting you adjust your home’s temperature to be at your exact comfort level. Plus, you can also set it to be off while you’re not home, so you don’t waste energy or saving-energy-wahl-family-heating-cooling-plumbingmoney.

Use Sunlight to Your Advantage

Instead of having the lights on, just pull back your curtains, and let the sun shine in. It costs nothing to use natural light to brighten up your home, so take advantage of it.

Use Power Strips to Cut Electric Costs

Phantom energy usage is a real thing, so plug your appliances and electronics into power strips, and turn the strip off when you’re not home or aren’t using the devices. This can save you big money in the long run.

Reduce Your Water Usage

Switching to low-flow showerheads and faucets can save you plenty of money on your water heating bills. Beyond that, little things like cutting your shower time and turning off the faucet while washing your hands can also make big differences.

Have a Technician Inspect Your HVAC Unit

Scheduling regular maintenance can ensure that your unit is running properly and not costing you extra money on your energy bill due to inefficiency.

Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing has been serving the Pittsburgh metro area since 1980 and makes it a priority to provide you with the best home service experience possible. For more information on cutting your energy costs, or for HVAC or plumbing help, call us at 412-276-9245.

Spring Maintenane Checklist

It’s technically been spring for a couple of weeks now, and that means it’s time for some spring cleaning. But where do you start? Before you tackle tedious tasks like cleaning out your closets and dusting every inch of your home, take a few minutes to check these important items off your spring maintenance checklist.

Check Your Roof

The winter cold and snow might have done a number on your roof these past few months. Now that it’s nice and sunny, take a stroll around your home, and inspect your shingles. If you notice that any shingles are torn, buckled, or missing, you should get them repaired or replaced right away. Damaged or missing shingles can make for leaks, water damage, and even unwelcome critters in your home.

Check Your Outdoor Faucetsspring-maintenance-checklist-wahl-family-heating-cooling-plumbing

If the pipes inside your home can freeze while being protected by walls and indoor heating, then the pipes on the outside of your home have an even rougher time. Check your hose faucets for damage by running the water and placing your thumb over the opening. If you can stop the water flow, the pipe supplying the water is probably frozen and will need to be replaced.

Service Your HVAC Units

Once it gets warm outside, it’s time to turn off your furnace and turn on your AC. When performing either of these tasks, you should call an HVAC technician to inspect and service your unit to ensure it is in tip-top shape for the road ahead. There’s nothing worse than going to turn on your AC on a hot day, only to realize that it isn’t working.

Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing can provide your home with quality, affordable HVAC maintenance in the Pittsburgh metro area. We can even help you with those frozen hose faucets if you need us. For a happy home this spring, #GetWahl, and call 412-276-9245.

Why Do I Need A Water Filtration System?

Fifty billion bottles of water are purchased each year, and 80% of them end up in landfills. Many people buy bottled water because they are concerned about the tap water in their homes not being suitable to drink. Even if you think your tap water is fine, you should install a water filtration system in your home and ask yourself these questions about your drinking water.

What’s in my drinking water?

  • Chloramines: Many companies are now cleaning water using this chemical that is created by adding ammonia to chlorine. While it kills bacteria more effectively, chloramine carries risks for bladder cancers, as well as kidney, liver, and nervous system problems.
  • Heavy Metals & Pesticides: Even with cleaning processes, there can still be traces of heavy metals and pesticides in your drinking water. These can cause a multitude of health problems if they enter your body in largewater-filtration-system amounts.

How do I know if my water is contaminated?

Your drinking water may be contaminated if:

  • It’s cloudy. Minerals in your water should be 99.9% pure, so if your water is cloudy, don’t drink it.
  • It’s orange or brown-colored. This one’s a given. Don’t touch water that is discolored like this.
  • It smells like rotten eggs. While some sulfur smells are normal, too strong of a smell is a bad sign.
  • It has sediments. Since water is drawn from the ground, some sediments are normal, but too noticeable of sediments indicate a serious problem.

Water filtration systems help get rid of contaminants and provide a cleaner, better taste to your drinking water. Not to mention, by having a water filtration system, you’ll be able to use reusable bottles and save thousands of plastic bottles from ending up in landfills.

Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing can install water purification systems and water softeners to your home, so you can rest easy knowing your family is safe from contaminants. We’ve been serving the Pittsburgh metro area since 1980, so call us today at 412-276-9245.

How to Shut Down Your Furnance for Spring

Even if it doesn’t feel like it, spring is here, and warm weather is approaching. Your furnace did a great job of keeping your home warm during winter, but it’s important to shut it down for spring and summer. Turning it off actually conserves energy and saves you money. In case you didn’t know, these are the steps you should take to properly shut down your furnace for spring.

Turn off the Pilot Light

Most gas furnaces have pilot lights that are always lit, but turning them off helps save you money on your utility bills. Locate the valve that goes to your furnace on your gas line, and turn the handle until it’s at a 90-degreeshut-down-your-furnace-wahl-family-heating-cooling-plumbing angle to the pipe. Once it is, your furnace will be completely shut off.

Change & Clean the Filters

Figure out what type of filters your furnace uses and if they are in the vents or the furnace itself. While some filters are reusable and can simply be cleaned, others need to be replaced entirely. You should clean or replace your filters every one to four months to keep them working properly.

Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detector

Over time, your furnace’s combustion chamber can develop cracks that you might not be able to see. These cracks could allow for carbon monoxide leaks, so it’s important to ensure your carbon monoxide detector is functioning properly once you shut down the furnace.

Fully Inspect the Furnace

Before you finish shutting down your unit, inspect the pilot light, motor bearings, burner assembly, and heat exchanger. This is especially important if your furnace is an older model that might need to be replaced soon.

Contact the Professionals

It’s always a good move to call a professional to inspect your furnace and perform any necessary repairs or more difficult maintenance. The pros can also make sure your furnace will be in good working order when the colder months roll back around.

Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing can help you shut down your furnace for spring and perform any necessary furnace repairs or maintenance you need. We have been serving the Pittsburgh metro area for over 25 years and promise you the best service possible. For help with your furnace, call us at 412-276-9245.

Spring Cleaning Checklist

Warm(ish) weather is finally here, and with spring weather comes spring cleaning. It’s important to properly prep your home now, so you don’t have to worry about everything as much once the really nice weather comes around. Whether you try to knock it all out in one weekend or you take your time, follow this spring cleaning checklist to get your home tidy and comfortable.

Your Laundry Room

  • Clean the Dryer Vent: A dirty vent can cause dangerous fires.
  • Clean the Washing Machine: These can smell musty after a while, so purchase a cleaning bar, and run it through the machine to clean the inside of your washer.

Your Bedrooms

  • Clean the Bedding: Dust mites and allergens live in your bedding, so wash your sheets, comforter, and pillowcases in hot water to fully clean them.spring-cleaning-wahl-heating-cooling=plumbing
  • Rotate the Mattress: This extends the life of your mattress and prevents you from sleeping in any sinking areas.

All Over the House

  • Dust Everything: Walls, furniture, ceiling fans, blinds – you name it. Just make sure to use a microfiber cloth, so the dust clings to that and doesn’t go into the air.
  • Vacuum Everything: Carpet, upholstery, and curtains should be vacuumed to get rid of deep-rooted dust mites and allergens.
  • Check the Alarms: Replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and test them to make sure they’re working properly.
  • Clean/Change the Furnace Filters: Clean filters allow your furnace to run more efficiently and properly filter particles from the air it pumps into your home.

Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing can help you get your home ready for spring with HVAC maintenance and plumbing repair. We’ve been serving the Pittsburgh metro area since 1980 and guarantee you the best service possible. For all your HVAC and plumbing needs, #GetWahl by calling 412-276-9245.

Making Your Home Allergy-Free

Spring has finally sprung! It’s that time of year when the weather gets warmer, the sun stays out longer, and allergens descend upon your home like it’s nobody’s business. The most common allergens and asthma triggers live inside your home and can cause you to experience a multitude of health problems if they are not addressed. Lucky for you, these tips can help you keep your home allergy-free!

allergy-free-wahl-family-heating-cooling-plumbingTake Cleaning Precautions

If you’re using a dry feather duster to clean your home, all you’re doing is kicking the dust up from your furniture into the air you’re breathing. Use a damp microfiber cloth that attracts dust, and wear a dust mask to protect yourself from allergens.

Vacuum Up Allergens

Vacuuming your carpets and furniture is a great way to control the amount of dust and allergens in your home. However, vacuuming still can send dust into the air, so make sure you use a vacuum with a HEPA filter in order to trap small dust particles.

Wash Away Allergens

Your pillows, bedding, and throw rugs are paradises for dust mites. Once a week, wash your sheets, pillowcases, and blankets in very hot water, and dry them in high-temperature dryers to kill dust mites. Use allergen-proof cases on your mattresses and non-washable items as well.

Invest in Air Purifiers & Humidity Controllers

Dust particles thrive in spaces where there is little moisture. Adding a humidifier can increase moisture levels and reduce the number of allergens in your home. Air purifiers can also help control the amount of dust and mold in your home as long as you use ones with HEPA filters.

Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, & Plumbing can install whole-home air purifiers and humidity control units in your house to keep it dust and allergen-free. Homeowners and businesses in the Pittsburgh metro area have been trusting us since 1980, so you can rest assured that we will deliver you the best service possible. Help your family breathe easier, and call us at 412-276-9245.

Ways to Save Green with Home Maintenance

Everybody loves to save a little green – that green being money. As a homeowner, you probably want to keep your house as pristine as it was the day you bought it, but over time everything suffers from a bit of wear-and-tear. When it comes to taking care of your home, it’s easier and cheaper to fix problems sooner rather than later. Take our advice, and perform these quick home maintenance chores to save some green in the long run.

Check Your Vents and Filters

Your air conditioner, dryer, heater, septic tank and a few other home appliances all have vents and filters that affect how they function. If the filters are dirty or clogged, they can cause major problems. Dirty filters on your HVAC units can lead to early breakdowns, while clogged dryer vents can lead to dangerous fires. Take a few minutes to clean the filters and vents now to avoid bigger, more expensive problems later on.

Check Your Alarms

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have an important job in your home, but if they aren’t functioning properly, you risk putting your family in danger. Make sure your alarms have working batteries, and test them regularly to ensure they still go off when they should. Performing this small maintenance task could save your family from a harmful situation and save you money on consequential damages.

Check Your Water-Based Appliances

You should be draining your water heater once a year and pumping your septic tank once every three to five years. Little maintenance tasks like these keep your systems from leaking or backing up and end up saving you thousands of dollars in repairs.

If you’re in need of home maintenance help, get Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing. We can perform routine maintenance procedures that will help you save green when it comes to your home repair bills. We’ve been serving the Pittsburgh Metro area since 1989, so call us at 412-276-9245 today!
